I am so sick of cultural appropriation. I just got into an argument with someone who was claiming that white people are "not allowed" to wear dreadlocks or a mohawk, since these are the "property" of the rastas and the Iroquois/Mohawk tribes, respectively.

My response, "do egyptians own the idea of the shaved head?" The egyptian priesthood is the earliest historical reference for the shaved head. Do they own it?

The person bowed out of the discussion, and I was banned from the forum for being a "racist".

The discussion made me so angry. I'm pretty close to reproducing it here, in full.

I walked by a couple of actual Geisha in Kyoto last week. They look nothing like the picture above. The fabric being used is more of a yukata, a relatively inexpensive traditional summer outfit people (usually girls) still wear to do things like watch fireworks and attend festivals. The fan is tiny, and I've never seen chopstick with tassels.

Calling the minor Japanese trimmings racism is inappropriate. Culture is not trademarked. Cultural is not property of a group of people. These people are not able to license it and call racism if it is used without their permission.

I'd love to see the whole discussion that TheNocturnalEgyptian was involved in.

We could have a racist gang bang. Or would it be a racially motivated gang bang? :)

My friendly advice to you is not to waste your time arguing with morons - they are everywhere at pandemic levels. I can barely engage in conversation today beyond discussing the weather and price of gasoline before I have to turn it off and get on with my life - it is pointless at this late date. I'm sorry to report that anyone who hasn't figured out how totally corrupt and fucked up our system is at this late date probably does not deserve a place in the gene pool going forward.
