Greets!

I've been wanting a Bark River golok machete knife for years, and with an incoming check this friday it's finally within my reach.

I've narrowed my final choice down to one of two, I love them both:

Ghost Green G10 material:

Turquoise Canvas Micarta material:

Which handle would you go for? Why?

A sharp tip has its purposes, something to consider. Flip a coin on the color, green seems to suit the blade styling more, but I like darker colors on my stuff.

Indeed. I have plenty of knives, including my EDC, that have sharp tips. This one's mainly for machete tasks... clearing, chopping, batoning, kindling, etc.

Instead of flipping a coin, I'll let the poll decide it for me.

Most that I have seen have green handles. I would chose the other color just to be different. And also
it may make it easy to spot from others.

Maybe go with whatever color zombie blood is, so you don't have to go nuts cleaning it to make it look new again?

;)

That's a very expensive machete, considering it only has an 11 inch blade, I been shopping too,
was looking at Kabar, some lighter some heavier, ones for grass or light duty, the other is
a more versatile heavier chopper, they both close to a $ 100 . I need something better than SOG
or even Gerber but I don't feel like spending big bucks on a hack tool like this without research.
Your pick looks well made, especially handle.

What's special about these other than being well made, anything else ?

I have researched. I already own 2 Bark River knives, they are both exquisite... much higher quality than the price I paid for them. Also, I have handled a Bark River golok (of a friends)... it was love at first sight.

Sorry to hear that.
Which color would you choose if this were a non-gin-killer machete?

Ouch! Major lack of love for the turquoise... seems that twice as many forum members would rather see me committed to the nuthouse than choose that color! :o

LOL! I looked at the pics before the poll options and liked the darker green. And since you insisted I'm vote number three on the treatment.

I like the green. Or a wire wrapped handle.

The turquoise canvas appears to have some grippiness to the handle? That might be important if you are whacking zombies in the summer and you get blood on your hand. The other handles look like they would be more slippery. Don't want to drop your machete.

I would get one of the pointed versions instead of the butter knife type. Looks like a very high quality blade though, and they offer a high quality sheath, which most other machete companies don't. I personally like black handles.

The problem with the pointed versions of those is that you lose metal in the front area of the blade, and the Golok is designed to be a front-heavy blade type to assist with heavy chopping. Defeats the purpose.

And yes, Bark River makes VERY high quality stuff, close to custom maker quality.

I'd go with the Ivory color. That way you look more like you're on an expedition and less like a domestic terrorist. Unless you think you need the extra tactical camo color. Also it's more 'classy' so might be easier to resell (not sure).

edit: looks like the site I'm looking at is cheaper than the one you're looking at: http://www.gpknives.com/machetes.html

I have 7 or 8 different styles of machetes, and due to the length and heft of a good blade, there is little noticeable difference in chopping power to me between pointed and traditional machete blades. The Bark river machete blades are very thick and heavy. I think you'd chop through anything reasonable with either blade style. With the pointed style you could also poke zombies...

I would go with something in hot pink. That way everyone would think you are rather feminine and wont mess with you!

I like that Ivory color.

Thanks for the link. I wasn't going to buy from the other site, it just had the best "linkale" photos.

I hear ya, mick! ;D

I tell Henny all the time "I need another knife about as much as I need a hole in my head", but I continue to acquire new ones. Backup knives for the extra spare backup knives... hell, I think I have a pair of spare knife COLLECTIONS at this point! It's a sickness, I tell you... maybe the psychiatrist that so many forum members have voted for is a serious option... ;)

Oh well... at least I can open a knife shop after TSHTF.
