I am Egyptian in name only. My dad arrived here legally, he has always had a certain fetish for following ALL the rules. Every single one.

The first thing he did in America was get a job as a security guard, working nights. He taught himself english instead of watching TV. He got into sales eventually. He changed his Egyptian name to "Sam". He's a wizard on the phone, everybody loves him, they ask for him by name.

He left his old culture behind. He speaks perfect English. You couldn't even tell just based on his voice alone. He insisted that we become 100% american.

We cook the traditional food and that's pretty much it. He hasn't looked back. He fucking loves America.

Yesterday I brought to readers’ attention that now that the Somali population in Lewiston, ME is large and well-established, the demands for accomodation of Muslim religious practices has begun, see CAIR threatens, here. In my post I attributed a role to Catholic Charities in bringing the first Somalis to Maine, and after a little research I found that assertion was accurate. However, the majority of the thousands of Somalis now continuing to upset Lewiston are secondary migrants resettled by Catholic Charities and other federally contracted agencies in Georgia. One of the things we always argue about is the merits of debt. Debt has been very good to him. He has never paid a shred of interest that he didn't have to, and has never missed a payment on anything. He proudly told me one day that he's never bounced a check in his life. He's always counseled me to be open to the idea of debt, because it's allowed him to build his life in a way that he couldn't have otherwise.


In the 70's he went into debt and purchased a 3-unit apartment building. Through the sweat of his brow, he taught himself plumbing, sprinkler systems, air conditioning, woodworking, gardening, painting...he did it all himself. He remodeled kitchens and bathrooms. Laid the grout, did the tilework. He made a shitty apartment VERY nice, and rented it out. Bought a failing property and turned it into a money-maker. He just retired this year. All his properties are now self-sustaining and debt free. I'm absolutely amazed at what he has been able to do in his lifetime.


He was born a christian in egypt, an oppressed 5% minority of the population, told me stories about being roughed up in the streets for the way he dressed. Muslims would threaten to attack his older sister because she was wearing a long-sleeve V-neck sweater, which is too revealing. He knew there was no way to continue their life in egypt. They had a successful family business there that they left behind.

Moved to America, learned the rules quickly, and retired a millionaire. He doesn't give me money, either. I have a chair at his dinner table waiting for me anytime, so I will never go hungry. He gave me advice and education instead of money.

The healthcare agreement will give undocumented immigrants who entered Sweden illegally the same rights currently offered to legal asylum seekers.
