A county sheriff in Georgia wrecked his patrol car while driving drunk and then fled the scene of the accident, according to police.
Robert Christopher Matt had been a member of the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office for four years when he careened off Highway 81 early Wednesday morning. He was nowhere to be found following the accident, but police said they found his injured girlfriend wandering along the road shortly thereafter.
“He was such a good boy,” an elderly neighbor told 11Alive News. “I’ve never seen him drink a bit, so this is news to me.”
The wrecked cruiser flipped several times after hitting an embankment. Police later located Matt at his home approximately 5 miles away, and charged him with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to maintain a lane and possession of an open container in a vehicle.
A spokesperson for the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office said that Matt had permission to take his cruiser home, but was prohibited from driving it off-duty, prohibited from carrying passengers and prohibited, obviously, from driving it drunk. The spokesperson also said he resigned following his arrest.
