Teenager has stomach removed after drinking liquid nitrogen cocktail (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/oct/08/teenager-stomach-liquid-nitrogen-cocktail)
"...Monday 8 October 2012 07.12 EDT
Paul Ashton, director of public health for NHS Cumbria, says alcohol industry should not be playing with nitrogen. A teenager has had an emergency operation to remove her stomach after drinking a cocktail laced with liquid nitrogen while celebrating her 18th birthday in a wine bar.
Gaby Scanlon, from Heysham, Lancashire, was with friends at Oscar's wine bar in Lancaster city centre when she began to feel ill, becoming breathless and developing severe stomach pain.
She was taken to hospital at 11pm on Thursday, where she was diagnosed with a perforated stomach. Surgeons operated immediately to save her life. Lancashire police said: "Medical opinion is that this would have proved fatal had the operation not been carried out urgently." She is now in a serious but stable condition in the Lancaster Royal Infirmary.
An investigation is taking place into the circumstances of how she was given the drink. Once added to alcohol, liquid nitrogen makes the drink appear surrounded by a cloud of white or grey vapour.
Doctors at Royal Lancaster Infirmary said their only option was to operate immediately and remove her stomach.
In a statement, Oscar's wine bar said it was "tremendously concerned" about Gaby and sent its best wishes to her family...."

If I didn’t know better, I would SWEAR this couldn’t be real… It’s slightly over 8 minutes of Denial of Butt Chugging. Watching the lawyer say “butt chugging” over and over again, with none of the guys in the background so much as cracking a smile, is flat out incredible.
And not even a single snicker to be seen, it IS an awesome nooz conference!

i guess i'm glad to be 'out of the loop' enough to not know about liquid nitrogen cocktails.
i don't understand - how can you drink something like that ? wouldn't it hurt you mouth, lips, tongue - if it can damage the stomach enough to need to be removed, how did she get it down without painful coldness on her mouth ?
these sound like subjects that might be studied in an academic contest, for an academician vying for an "Ignobel award".
the last article i read about the "Ignobel awards" was about the fluid dynamics of penguin pooping. they have to squirt the droppings far enough to clear the nest - and it became a subject of academic study - not just for a biologist - a physicist got into it too.

The next fluid dynamics study area will be S hitting the fan!

I think the kid in sunglasses behind the kid that eventually speaks is holding on for dear life trying not to snicker. You don't get many clear shots of him due to the camera angle.

"liquid nitrogen makes the drink appear surrounded by a cloud of white or grey vapour"
This should have been the caution marker to stay away.
But we don't always read the warning signs.
Another example, while fishing last week I caught a strange fish. Discretion told me NOT to touch it. The kid I was with found it interesting and wanted to touch it. Curiosity had the best of her, luckly I scared her off. I safely released the creature and later found out it was a northern stargazer, and that it has electric shock for defense. It's teeth were nasty and it's diameter was nearly the same as it's length.

Those fish are also venomous, poisoned spines. That girl was lucky you kept her from touching it.

I rarely keep anything, 95% of the time I catch and release.
But there is NO WAY I would eat that thing!
I'll keep weak fish (florida for sea trout) blue, stripper or fluke.
My brother caught some 70 - 80 lb. tuna on an overnight trip two weeks ago ...... he didn't give me any.

BTW
Not to hijack the thread.
My brother saw hundreds of pilot whales and dolphins all night long feeding on squid while Canyon fishing. I know there are 'fish stories' but I'm buying it.

Okay. Now back to topic for me, OP
What are the plans for this young patient without a stomach? A lifetime of feeding herself through an ostemy using syringes?

I don't know, but all options will be hellish.

If this was from America, I'd say she's be the lucky one of all her friends to weigh under 250lbs... until some of them purposefully did it to lose weight and still eat anything they want. They'd just rename the drink the "Stomach Staple".

A former gf was borderline obese in the mid-80s and instead of diet/exercise she let some ahole surgeon talk her into getting her stomach stapled. Now she is limited to only FOUR ounces (half a cup) of food/drink at a time. So she really can't 'eat anything she wants'. It's pathetic, but she made that choice and now has to live with it.

I wonder what the long term consequences are of stapling the stomach? I don't imagine it to be very good as these people become older...

If she can only drink 4 ounces at a time, then manual labor or exercise would be out of the question. She couldn't stay hydrated that way.
