Something is always going to offend someone

Urinals created by Dutch designer Meike van Schijndel are pictured in Germany in 2008. A sumptuous new French restaurant in Sydney said Wednesday it would remove two urinals designed to resemble a woman's lipsticked mouth, apologising for any offence they have caused. AFP - A sumptuous new French restaurant in Sydney said Wednesday it would remove two urinals designed to resemble a woman's lipsticked mouth, apologising for any offence they have caused.

The Ananas Bar and Brasserie said the bright red-lipped urinals shaped like an open mouth were "a commonly used European design piece from female Dutch artist Meike van Schijndel".

"We sincerely apologise if they have caused offence. They are being removed today," a spokeswoman said in a statement.

The stylish restaurant opened three weeks ago, with the Sydney Morning Herald's food reviewer describing the urinals as "no real surprise here at Ananas, merely adding to the extraordinary collision of statements and intent".

But feminist, former political adviser and writer Anne Summers said the design was offensive. "Misogyny is very widespread, and this is just an example of misogyny," said Summers.

"The concept is pretty challenging and confronting. They're asking men to put their d(expletive) in these mouths as urinals."

Australia is the grip of a fierce political debate about sexism after Prime Minister Julia Gillard, the nation's first woman leader, accused opposition leader Tony Abbott of being a misogynist.

The unmarried Gillard said Tuesday she had been personally offended by many of Abbott's remarks over the years -- from urging her to "make an honest woman of herself", to his cat-calling at her in parliament.

"If he wants to know what misogyny looks like in modern Australia, he doesn't need a motion in the House of Representatives, he needs a mirror," she said in stinging comments.

There is nothing more important in Australia right this minute than to argue over pissoires and some BS about the 2 political leaders and how they are both really just phsyco nut jobs.

I'm surprised that the Rolling Stones don't sue. That's what I'd do. Oh hang on. You can't Sue people. That's Mysoginist! Better Bruce or Dave them instead.

Perhaps we just need to make some bowls that are suitable for women. Seeing as they seem to want to sleep with negroes these days perhaps it can be modelled accordingly... oh wait.. could be offensive... but not if it was in Cleo Magazine. Then it would be liberating.

You see, I'll learnin.

Well, at least it wasen't shaped like a womans YOU KNOW WHAT, some guy would spend some extra time in the bathroom to leave something extra in the urinals.

I don't think those urinals are misogynistic, but just in bad taste. I get a laugh when people design things like this and try to say they are "art". They are just trying to get attention.

Think about it. When you have an erection, you can't piss. The two don't mix. Featuring a urinal in an 'erotic' way, is just plain stupid.

Yep I know what you mean. We have a guy down here who photographs naked children but he uses "lighting" and as a result it's called ART. He has a new exhibition on or coming soon.

I don't know what to say.... I don't know if I'm more shocked that someone would come up with the idea or that someone would complain about it

I'm sure Femi-nazi Anne Summers wouldn't complain if there was something "degrading to males" [who knows what they could come up with....] in a women's WC.

Is pissing in a mouth considered acceptable to the general public in any capacity? The answer is no, and probably for a good reason.

The general publik gets pissed on everyday and enjoys it without evening knowing. I would have laughed my ass off and went about doing my business.

Knowing is half the battle so they say. I'm sure it's a great bathroom for the kids.

You are going to use that lame excuse/rallying cry?

It is a private business. The owners can damn well do want they want with their urinals if so inclined. Voice your opinion with your plastic/funny money if you so choose. Don't force it on the owners who have caused no harm to you.

Sure he can do it. He can choose to do whatever. He can choose to keep them, or get rid of them.

Is it morally right is the question. If you think the mental imagery of pissing in people mouths is hilarious, and a good thing in society, hey that's great, interesting.

Wrong, you used "for the children" don't change the subject. Just how many kids are you going to see going to a "swanky French restaurant"? Vote with your feet. Don't force it upon others. Are your injured physically? Guessing not here....

No, you are wanting to force what your perception of how things should be upon those that have done you no harm.

Let me ask you something. At any point in your lifetime, would you have visited this "swanky French restaurant" without seeing any sort of advertising? I have always assumed that you like 95% of the posting members are from the states. Were you planning to visit Australia to specifically visiting this establishment prior to reading this article? I am guessing that you, like myself, would have never have known about the urinals in question, like 99.9999999999999999% of the global population if EE hadn't posted the thread.

You know what you're right. I just don't get enough mental imagery of people pissing in other people's mouths in society. In fact, there should be more of it.

It's something really missing in society, and frankly for anyone to be even remotely offended by it is just plain silly. Pissing in someone else's mouth is a good thing, and funny enough to make you laugh your ass off, and serves only to strengthen society as a whole.

Kinda like Bonobos monkeys, people could just piss in each others mouths to lighten the mood, then bang each other right there on the sidewalk, park bench, etc..

Damn, I think you're on to something!
