Updated at 6:58 p.m. ET: Police in Colorado confirmed Friday that a dismembered body they discovered earlier in the week in a suburban Denver park is that of 10-year-old schoolgirl Jessica Ridgeway, who went missing from her Westminster home a week ago.
"Our focus has changed from the search for Jessica to a mission of justice for Jessica," Westminster Police Chief Lee Birk said. "We realize there is a predator at large in our community."
Ridgeway began a short walk from her home to Witt Elementary School on the morning of Oct. 5 but never arrived. A massive search by hundreds of law enforcement officers was launched hours later because Jessica's mother, Sarah Ridgeway, works nights and slept through a call from school officials saying the fifth-grader wasn't there.

Ridgeway's case made national headlines in the days following her disappearance as hundreds of police officers, bloodhounds and scores of volunteers scoured the chidl's neighborhood looking for clues to her whereabouts. Her father, Jeremiah Bryant, who lives in Missouri, traveled to Colorado when he learned of his daughter's disappearance, police said.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out with them," Birk said, adding, "They’ve been in our hearts from the beginning."
Ridgeway's body was found about 7 miles southwest of her home, police said.
The FBI had warned residents that Ridgeway may have been abducted by someone they know and asked them to be alert for people they know who might have suddenly changed their appearance or uncharacteristically missed work.
"We need the community to be vigilant and alert, to continue to call in tips, to report suspicious incidents, and behavior,” Birk said.
Earlier Friday authorities shifted their focus in the case to appealing for help in tracking down her apparent kidnapper by releasing a behavior profile for the suspected kidnapper.
“We suspect that someone in the community knows this individual,” FBI spokesman Dave Joly said at a press conference Thursday.
In their search for Jessica, the FBI in Denver said it’s important to focus not on how this person looks but on any kind of unusual behavior.
That behavior could include missing work and appointments, leaving town, changes in alcohol and drug use, or changes in appearance, according to an FBI Denver press release.
“Somebody who’s maybe very engaged in the media coverage of this particular investigation, and maybe they’re a little annoyed by all the coverage.

Former FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt said the condition of the body police found Wednesday could indicate an experienced killer.
“It’s someone who’s fully capable of doing something like this again,” Van Zandt said.
“It could be your boss, it could be your friend, and, ultimately, it could be your family member,” Joly said.
The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

There are some very sick bastards out there, and the ones that do this kind of crap should never see a day in prison, if proven that without a shadow of a doubt they are guilty. I truly wish that the powers that be would bring back "public" executions. And not the painless methods that are done today.

I would want the bastard to die, very slowly, very painfully and very loudly, in full view of the public. And harsh punishment to any that do real harm to any child. Not this politically correct bullshit that is dished out today. Not all that are convicted of child abuse today imho are. Hell in some places you can be convicted just by spanking your own child in public.

I mean the ones that do harm and not a one timer, but for the ones that get convicted multiple times. They need to have a "object" lesson applied to them that they will carry for the rest of their life's. Hell brand them on the forehead or face, so one look anyone can see what bastards they are.

Rant: Off..

That's very disturbing...and the thought she probably suffered greatly before she died.
I can't imagine how parents deal with this kind of grief.

It is scary our society these days, I always walked to school, or to the bus stop 4 blocks away, you don't expect some freakin lunatic to kidnap and cut-up your kid into pieces.

Van Zandt states that its probably someone you know,

Is it strange to anyone else what Van Zandt says here?

A couple of things are odd about this. First, her friends were waiting for her at a park where they would all meet and walk to school together. That was 3 blocks from her home - so maybe a 5-10 minute walk? This is broad daylight and someone in that short time span was able to kidnap her? And no one saw anything?

Second - the school called the home many times and couldn't reach the mother because she was asleep? That is odd to me. With a child in school, how could you ignore the phone?

Very sad.

Okay, this is strange - the photo of the little girl above is dated '06, so six years ago. Does she look age 4 in that photo (I don't think so)? She has the same eyeglasses in the more recent, other photos posted by media sites.

And when in '06 did they pose for a facebook style picture. I saw the date but never put it together until it was mentioned.

I've just never seen so many off the wall comments coming from so many different "officials" on one case.

Or at least written about.

Maybe I don't look into them that much, but they seem to be getting comments from everywhere on this one.

Park Dietz, the founder of the Threat Assessment Group of Newport Beach, Calif., said the type of person who would abduct and kill a child tends to be unsophisticated.

He said such people tend to be toothless and ugly, less educated and poor. They drive dilapidated vehicles, are impulsive and often have substance-abuse problems. Having their way with a child of interest for a very short time is, to them, more valuable than the life of the child.

Clint Van Zandt, a retired FBI profiler, said most victims know their assailant. Van Zandt said the number of children in the U.S. who are abducted and killed by people they don't know is about 100 to 120 per year.

The strange photos and the huge media hype on this case make me suspect that it could be a false flag. If it is, I can't help wondering WHY...what is the agenda? If you search, there are many recent articles about RFID chips placed on school ID badges of kids. Some of it is very intrusive. This article states that truant kids at one school are wearing the badges 24/7, the school automatically calls their homes every morning and tracks them all the time. They state that schools lose money when kids are absent from school, but that doesn't make sense to me??? Why would they lose money over an absent kid or two?

"In Anaheim, about 75 seventh- and eighth-graders from Dale and South Junior High Schools are taking part in the pilot program. Students with four or more unexcused absences have “volunteered” to carry a handheld GPS device. Participation in the program will enable the students to avoid being prosecuted and a potential stay in juvenile hall.

Each school day, the delinquent students get an automated “wake-up” phone call reminding them that they need to get to school on time. In addition, five times a day they are required to enter a code that tracks their locations: as they leave for school, when they arrive at school, at lunchtime, when they leave school and at 8pm. These students are also assigned an adult “coach” who calls them at least three times a week to see how they are doing and help them find effective ways to make sure they get to school. Like San Antonio, Anaheim schools lose about $35 per day for each absent student. Local school officials believe the program can pay for itself as more students attend classes. "

This incident will have parents screaming for schools to chip their kids. Don't you think? (glad we homeschool)

You're on the right track, sunshine. First and foremost, "question authority."

Update: Moments ago, a brief press conference was staged to announce the arrest of a suspect in the kidnapping and killing of Jessica Ridgeway (http://blogs.westword.com/latestword/2012/10/jessica_ridgeway_search_missing_backpack_westminst er.php), a ten-year-old Westminster girl who went missing on the way to school October 5. Austin Reed Sigg, seventeen, is being held on suspicion of multiple counts, including first-degree murder and kidnapping. Westminster Police Chief Lee Birk said he hopes the arrest is a "significant step toward justice for Jessica."After being introduced by Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso, Birk noted that "seventeen-year-old Austin Sigg is in our custody" before thanking the community "for the tremendous public outpouring of support," which he said gave law enforcement strength and encouragement during the investigative process. He added that the same was true for the Ridgeway family. He also had words of praise for other law enforcement agencies involved in the inquiry, be they local, state or federal, and folks who called in tips, which he described as "instrumental and very helpful."

According to Birk, "We notified the Ridgeway family this morning of the arrest. We hope and pray this arrest gives them some measure of closure in dealing with this horrible tragedy and the loss they have suffered."We hope in some way knowing an arrest has been made in this case will maybe cause our community to rest a little easier," he added.
Next to the microphone was Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey, who echoed many of Birk's statements. He called the investigation a collaborative effort between assorted agencies that continued day and night from October 5 onward. But when it came to details, he was circumspect.

Westminster police chief Lee Birk, Jeffco DA Scott Storey and other officials arrive at the press conference.

"Justice for Jessica is a process," Storey said, "and this is the beginning of that process.... I know you're yearning for a lot of information. We can't give you a lot of information. Affidavits in this case have been sealed."I can tell you that charges are forthcoming. Charges will be filed within the next couple of days, and then we start a different process.... This is a continuing investigation. Certainly, we are still focused on the integrity of the investigation, and then we'll go into the prosecution aspect of it."
Storey stressed that "Mr. Sigg has a presumption of innocence and we're going to honor that." He then deflected questions from the assembled reporters, including one that he couldn't answer because of Sigg's age; at seventeen, he is technically a juvenile, although he could be charged as an adult.

After Storey concluded his remarks, Materasso addressed the press. He pointed out that Sigg's first court appearance is scheduled for 8 a.m. tomorrow morning at Division 10 in Jefferson County Court. He also noted that Sigg is being held on suspicion of two first-degree murder counts, both associated with Jessica Ridgeway, plus a kidnapping charge. Two subsequent counts -- criminal attempts at murder and kidnapping -- are related to the May incident at Ketner Lake where an adult jogger narrowly avoided being abducted.
Materasso also said that a warrant is being served on a home in the Ketner Lake area and stressed that the investigation remains ongoing. If anyone has additional information about Sigg, the case or other incidents, he went on, they should phone the Ridgeway tip line at 303-658-4336.

Those look up at the camera mug shots with that bright flash, makes that kid look positively evil. This is a tragedy for all around, one life gone and another ruined for the rest of his life. Feel for the family of the girl, not so much for the killer.
