Palm Beach, Fla. (CBS TAMPA) – The Florida State Board of Education passed a plan that sets goals for students in math and reading based upon their race.

On Tuesday, the board passed a revised strategic plan that says that by 2018, it wants 90 percent of Asian students, 88 percent of white students, 81 percent of Hispanics and 74 percent of black students to be reading at or above grade level. For math, the goals are 92 percent of Asian kids to be proficient, whites at 86 percent, Hispanics at 80 percent and blacks at 74 percent. It also measures by other groupings, such as poverty and disabilities, reported the Palm Beach Post.
The plan has infuriated many community activists in Palm Beach County and across the state.

“To expect less from one demographic and more from another is just a little off-base,” Juan Lopez, magnet coordinator at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Riviera Beach, told the Palm Beach Post.
JFK Middle has a black student population of about 88 percent.

“Our kids, although they come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, they still have the ability to learnhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png (http://tampa.cbslocal.com/2012/10/12/florida-passes-plan-for-racially-based-academic-goals/#),” Lopez said. “To dumb down the expectations for one group, that seems a little unfair.”

Others in the community agreed with Lopez’s assessment. But the Florida Department of Education said the goals recognize that not every group is starting from the same point and are meant to be ambitious but realistic.
As an example, the percentage of white students scoring at or above grade level (as measured by whether they scored a 3 or higher on the reading FCAT) was 69 percent in 2011-2012, according to the state. For black students, it was 38 percent, and for Hispanics, it was 53 percent.

In addition, State Board of Education Chairwoman Kathleen Shanahan said that setting goals for different subgroups was needed to comply with terms of a waiver that Florida and 32 other states have from some provisions of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. These waivers were used to make the states independent from some federal regulations.

“We have set a very high goal for all students to reach in Florida,” Shanahan said.

But Palm Beach County School Board vice-chairwoman Debra Robinson isn’t buying the rationale.

“I’m somewhere between complete and utter disgust and anger and disappointment with humanity,” Robinson told the Post. She said she has been receiving complaints from upset black and Hispanic parents since the state board took its action this week.
Robinson called the state board’s actions essentially “proclaiming racism” and said she wants Palm Beach County to continue to educate every child with the same expectations, regardless of race.

....fixed it in real-world jargon

I wonder what percent of Asians and Whites are reading at grade level now? IF they want 90% & 88% respectively, they're probably right under that level now, it's my opinion though, negros WILL NOT Double their percentage numbers in 6 years, it'll be more like 600 years if anything

yea so in order to be fair, they have to accept less from all demographics. This seems to be well underway. We've commented on that before. It's a race to the bottom.

In Australia they are going to base school funding on how many disadvantaged children you have in the school. Disadvantage can be disabled or it could mean someone who's National Assessment grades show they are behind the standard.

So now schools will seek out as many disadvantaged children they can get their hands on OR they will create them via the curriculum. Everyone will get dumber but the teachers/schools will get more money.

They will know how to troll forums however because this is being introduced into the curriculum. I think there is a university degree being formulated for this as well. /sarc

It's for the children.

It would have been better if they created more sophisticated weapons, built better homes, banded together, and actively killed their neighbors for conquest?

Same deal with the Native Americans? Palestinians?

So, since when does living a simple life with few possessions have no virtue?

I'm not trolling you joboo. I agree with your comment. I was watching some recorded tv last night and at the end of the show there was a movie that I remember seeing on holidays 30 years ago. It was called "The Gods must be Crazy". Great movie, very funny.

It was about a tribe of Kalihari (?) bushmen who hadn't seen white man. Lived on the savana and off the land. There were no rocks. The hardest thing they had was wood. They used this for preparing food or clothing, pouches etc. None of them possessed anything because you could just go and pick up what ever you needed. There was plenty of stuff.

They didn't even know what aircraft were but they heard the thunder and saw the smoke of the planes and thought the gods had indigestion.

Then one day a pilot of a small craft chucked a coke bottle out the window and it landed near their village. It was the hardest thing that they had ever seen and it was extremely useful for making food, stretching skins, making music. But there was only one. So they started argung and fighting, which they had never done before.

One of the tribesmen decided to take the thing back to the gods. Hillarity ensues.

Australian aborigines lived the same way. They carried a few tools with them for hunting and communicating but for the most part they picked up what they needed.

When I think of the Adam and Eve story I think that this is probably the way those two lived. Everything is there, you just take what you need.

Then someone came up with the idea of ownership. I think things started going down hill from there.

i'll try to find it, but i saw an article in the new york times this weekend that they are now advocating medicating ALL children from certain economic groups, regardless of if they have adhd or not. it's a new brand of social justice they claim. medicate all of the kids to bring them all to the same level in the classroom. already doing it in new york apparently. i'll see if i can find the story.
