Of course Ishnar Gafni will be riding in a Limo... Hahahahahah...

My favorite line in the article is at the end when he says, and I quote,
"We are just at the beginning and from here my vision is to see cardboard replacing metals ... {0}

I watched the youtube vid last night. Almost posted it until I figured out he was a chosen one.

There is a link in the description box of the youtube vid that told me something wasn't quite kosher with the whole thing.

Please see my thread on 3d printers

We have already used one to print a bike

We can email you the CAD file. Just add goop and print

This is the first technology in decades that I feel can literally change the world

Next stop, we invent one that does this for food. Just add carbon =)

3D Printer DRM Patent To Stop People Downloading a Car (http://torrentfreak.com/3d-printer-drm-patent-to-stop-people-downloading-a-car-121012/)

DRM systems in the digital media world are nothing new and are utilized extensively in the music, movie and video games industries. Now, after applying four years ago, a company has this week obtained a patent for a DRM system that aims to stop future owners of 3D printers from printing whatever they like. The dream of downloading a new pair of sneakers or even a car might already be in jeopardy, before it’s even begun.

Yes, the "Digital Rights Management" crowd is SCRAMBLING to try and stop 3d printing from ever taking off.

But they won't be able to stop it.

Here's why.

Music is controlled because the studios made it. They copyrighted it. But you can't copyright the idea of a bike. You can only copyright the bike YOU designed.

So hypothetically, I could open my CAD software, design a bike, and dispatch the file - freeware - around the web. That's my choice as a "studio" or "publisher". And I'm not making money from it, it's open source, no taxes...

It's not analogous to music whatsoever. Some people understand that DRM's purpose is to prevent copyright infringement from taking place - but this idea is falsely exaggerated to "DRM is to prevent companies from losing money" which is false! DRM is there to protect copyrights on products you designed - not to be a general safeguard against all competition.

3D printing will become the competition. We as a society have no responsibility to guarantee profits to mega-corps. There will still be a market for nice, after-market bikes. Carbon-fiber frames, customization, that sort of thing. A 3d printed bike is the lowest of the entry-models. If you can't design a bike which is better than a home-printed one, then to hell with you. You've been beaten by the competition.

It's like they hate capitalism or something =P

Just imagine when file-sharing means downloading .CAD files that contains functional gearworks...that can be printed at your local library...It'll be a new age. Humanitarian aid will involve setting up a 3D printer and sharing the types of files you need to make proper farm equipment.

From the article.

While owners of intellectual property might welcome such a system, the patent – which is registered to Intellectual Ventures, a patent-hoarding company run by former Microsoft CTO Nathan Myhrvold – also covers even more controversial items.

This guy needs to go sooner rather than later.
