just watched the ipad mini launch (the device that was going to totally rock earnings). it's basically a 7.9 inch iphone without the ability to make phone calls. kindle fire hd is way better and sells for $200. ipad mini, $330. time to short if you own it, this one is going down.

That's what everyone said when the iPad launched.
Never underestimate brand loyalty - AAPL will continue to do well... until it doesn't! ;D

And now, a message from our newest sponsor... immortal Zombie Steve Jobs! ;)

P.S. Full disclosure: I own an iPad 1, was an "early adopter". Bought it just a few weeks after the release, after swearing I would have nothing to do with the overpriced underfunctinalitied piece of crap... until I actually had a chance to play with one! It's still ticking along and working perfectly several years later, I'm posting from it now. It's undoubtably the most trouble-free and reliable computer I've ever owned. I also have an iPhone 3 that a friend gave me when he upgraded to the 4, to better help the feds track me. LOVE IT! My iPhone is my main "on the go" computer, music player, porn viewer, book reader, and communications device for my business. Henny Penny has an iPod Touch, she's just about worn it out by now she uses it so often. FUCK Apple for making such great products... I hate you for making me buy them! ;D

i've got an iphone 4, my wife has the 3g, and we have a macbook pro. they're all awesome. but, i really don't see anyone who already has a smartphone or tablet of any kind buying this. i'm totally mystified as to what the niche market is.

I've often wished my iPad was smaller, something the size of a large paperback book would be PERFECT. I would be far more inclined to leave the house with it. As is, my gen. 1 iPad mostly stays home... it's just too large for comfortable real-world use in public and too heavy to want to carry around all day.

I might end up being one of the zombies in my post above! ;D

There is a app for that! ;D

That saying as we know has become a popular saying in the mass media. Even cars ad's are comparing themselves to tablets (No buttons)

So knowing how the herd mentality and fads work, I am not surprised at all that there is being a move to tablets vs laptops. In some ways a small tablet is what a net book computer should have been. They are lighter, smaller and more portable.

I bet most home computer users really do not need all of the horsepower that a laptop or full blown computer has, and they mainly use their computers for surfing the net and emails and lightweight stuff like that.

My kindle firehd, 7" is saving wear and tear on my laptop, and now I only use it for programs that need the horsepower a tablet does not have or like programs (apps) to run on it.

I would rather tote my tablet when I am out and about, beats the hell out of lugging a laptop everywhere. This could be the beginning of a big shift away from traditional computers/laptops.

Just like lcd/led screens have replaced crt screens and users have recovered desktop space, because of the smaller footprint.

Tablets probably will do the same.

I just bought an iPad 2, have been using iPod 4 for almost 2 years. I decided to go for the iPad 2 a couple of days ago, primarily because it is quite cheap now, you get pretty much the same thing as the iPad mini, but with a bigger screen, for the same price. I would have gotten the iPad mini if it had been smaller, around 5.5-6 inch retina screen, and I could put it in the pocket. Certainly people will buy this one though, but I think they should have made it pocketable. I will continue using the iPod touch when I am away from home.

I have access to an IPad3, and had an IPad 2. They are nice, but it is designed so you cannot for instance detach a PDF from email and store it on the machine. You need to store it on the cloud (they may have an app for it, but you should not need one). Plus, the ones I have are 16 Gb and no ability to expand.

I just used some airline miles to get a Samsung Note 10.1 (Android- basically Linux). I should have it in a week or two. It sounds like a pretty nice tablet (with a 1024 resolution in pressure stylus for drawing, scrawling notes, etc.). It is 16 Gb, but you can add 32 Gb SD card (actually 64 Gb I hear, if you reformat to FAT32). Plus it can be "rooted" if I choose (of course, you should not have to...). I probably won't root it, but if I get bored with it, maybe. This puppy has a quad core processor (the ASUS quad core was not available for airline miles).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTiCErW6jxg Not sure about other op systems, with android there are four ways I can store and retrieve info from and to my tablet.

1. Direct usb transfer.

2. Using one of the cloud storage systems available.

3. WiFi home networking with my laptop, using the Es file Explorer app.

4. Bluetooth networking with my laptop, using the Bluetooth fire transfer app.

I do not care much for the cloud option much because my info is on the net on someone else's hard drives. For what I am doing 16 gig's is more than good. The only thing that would eat up space is videos and music. For a grin I loaded about 70 complete music albums just because I could. And then unloaded most of them. Same for videos, I can not see the reason to load up a bunch of vids and tote all the time.

Books take up a ridiculously small amount of space (text) so I will carry all of my library with me, and only load what music and videos that I want to use and then change out as my whims change.

Mark, That tablet looks good to go. Check out this forum and find that tablet and see what other users have to say about it. http://www.mobileread.com/forums/ That forum has info on all things tablet and e-readers written by actual users, I am sure your new toy has been discussed there.

Unless you have huge pdf files or plan to carry around a bunch of music and videos , 32 gig or 64 gig is great! If you need more storage look into wireless transfer (local network) or use a stand alone wireless hard drive.

Actually, despite the many limitations of the iPad, that isn't one of them. I strip PDF's from email and webpages all the time on my iPad, for later viewing in my book reader app (Goodreader).

My main "limitation" complaint about the iPad is that I haven't yet found a way to upload photos from my photo library to a webpage, even the ones with a "upload image" button.

When I check my email on Yahoo, I do not have an option to detach files. I got online, and others were complaining about it too. Maybe there is a way, but it is not made obvious.

When you install Goodreader (book reader/PDF App), it installs a "hook" in the email program. When a PDF shows up in an email, you can touch the link and hold, and an "Open in Goodreader" option appears along with the other options. You can then use it offline, like any other downloaded PDF. I'm sure there are other reader/PDF apps that do the same thing, I wouldn't know - Goodreader is the only one I've installed and it's the only one I use.

The niche market was created by android tablets as a low cost price point for people who wanted tablets. You have been able to get $200 dollar 7" android tablets from the get go, as opposed to $600 ipads. Yes screen size they are apple to oranges but many people can't afford an ipad and this fit their price point.

This move is stupid for apple for 2 reasons, 1 it shows that their moves are now being dictated by android and 2, they apparently missed the entire reason of people buying 7" tablets to begin with. Price.

I think apple has reached it's zenith 100%, as I have said many times, apple was good when jobs was there the first time, shit while he was gone, great the second time he was there and I see no reason why it won't be shit again now that he is gone. Not to mention when you are at the top there is only one place to go. Another thing is now that Apple is the dominant player I think they will lose the sort of hipster support the underdog anti micro$oft schtick. They are the new microsoft.

So yeah I'd go short apple at this point, but full disclosure I would've gone short apple a year ago and lost an ass load of money in the process.

oldee but goodee, the iRan is still pending of course,

if the iRan ever graduates beyond rumor/vaporware, that'll obviously be the time to go short, ;)
