A ‘Pay-what-you-want’ scheme has helped the ‘Humble ebook Bundle’ website to top $1.1million in sales in less than two weeks. The website allows readers pay whatever they like for a collection of ebooks by prominent writers.
*The deal, available from October 9 to 23, featured novels and comics by major writers, including Cory Doctorow and Neil Gaiman. The packages were "DRM-free", so readers could download or copy the ebooks an unlimited number of times.
If sold separately the books would cost over $150, but readers were allowed to choose the price they could afford to pay for them. Purchasers could also choose how their payment was split: between the authors, a selection of charities, and organizer Humble Bundle itself, the Guardian newspaper reported.
"The reception to this ebook bundle has been outstanding and we couldn't be more thrilled. The average price that customers are choosing to pay for this bundle is unprecedented at over $14. This is, by far, the highest average we have ever experienced for a pay-what-you-want promotion, and we believe it is a great indication for the future of ebooks and Humble Bundle," the company’s business development director Robert Martinez told the newspaper.
He noted that the "pay-what-you-want mechanic" proved a success because Humble Bundle is transparent about where the money is going.
The company is expected to host more ebook bundles in the future.
