Seems like every night around here the dog is barking and a coyote or coon is sniffing around the chicken palace trying to get in. I'm lookin' to discourage those varmints permanently.
I've got an old bolt action Cooey .22 with a tiny scope that I've had forever and is quite accurate. However, I can't see a thing at night through the scope. I'm looking for recommendations for a nice semi auto .22 with a scope I can see through at night.
I'm thinking Ruger 10/22 with a laser sight http://dx.com/p/1-30-reflex-laser-sight-rifle-scope-4-configurable-crosshairs-12173 similar to the one in the link, or this type http://dx.com/p/tactical-4-reticle-green-red-dot-sight-rifle-scope-gun-mount-1-x-cr2032-102710 There are many types a strong flashlight can be attached to as well
Any recommendations on .22's or scopes for night time use that anyone has actually used at night?

Ruger 10/22 is the best 22 gun ever made from my understanding. It's currently my favorite gun.
I'm not an expert on scopes or guns (giving my opinion based on experience,) but this is what I have:

It does seem more expensive than when I bought it though. You don't want to put TOO MUCH money into a 22 anyways.

Thanks for recommendations,
Although those scopes would be better at night than what I have, if possible, I want something that will absolutely work for quick target acquisition in dark conditions with maybe just a flashlight for supplemental light. When those varmints see me come outside I have only a few seconds to get a shot off, before they hightail it.

I have the 795 and love it. Great shooter at a great price!
10/22 isnt a bad way to go, especialy if you like to tinker and gear up your guns (lotso f stocks, mods and accessories availble for 10/22, inlcuding many varieties of high cap mags).
Find an older Marlin bolt action, like a model 80, if you want to go the bolt rout. Tack drives, and can take .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle (.22 shorts come in very handy for very quiet shots).

I use shorts with my bolt all the time. Quieter than a pellet gun. Good for taking out Jays and crows

The most accurate bolt .22 for the money is the CZ 452. Bolt actions are quieter than semi-autos.
The 2 most popular semi-autos are the Ruger 10-22 and the Marlin model 60. The Ruger has the most reliable feed mechanism but the Marlin is better suited for scope mounting, better balanced and is sleek. The Ruger is short and has a fat stock.
Mount a 1" tube scope to any of them and use steel rings. Use Federal ammo in the semi autos and Wolf MT in the CZ.

Depends on how much you want to pay for the scope, others can recommend mfg/models they use, I use Leupold, Nikon, Bushnell and BSA scopes on my rifles and switch them out as needed for what I want to do at the time.
For low light shooting with your .22 or any rifle, there are two things you need to look for besides cost. Name brand scopes will generally give you very good optics and the better the "Glass" the scope has the more it will will cost you.
Tho there are some Chinese scopes out there that are starting to have some surprisingly good optics in them, at very good prices and that is because they have "stolen" the tech from the name brand scope/optic company's that have shifted production to china.
One is to keep the magnification/power as low as you can go. The more magnification/power used, the more light gathering the scope needs.
The other thing is the front glass "objective lens" needs to be as large as you can get it for the magnification/power used on the scope.

I've got a BSA scope mounted on a stainless steel 10/22 ruger. It has a red dot on the crosshairs that is adjustable for brightness. It's easy to put that dot on what you're going to shoot. Without it you can't see where the crosshairs are.
For coons, skunks, fox and coyotes around a chicken coop I'd suggest a TRU CATCH box trap. I've got a couple of them and have eliminated a lot of skunks and coons with them. Much faster, easier and you'll probably be more successful getting rid of your varmits that way than trying to shoot them at night.
It's early morning right now and I'm headed out to check my box traps in the dark. I'll be taking my 10/22 with the combination of red dot and crosshairs with me.

If night time/low light shooting is at the center, Dogmans post is spot on. You want a larger front objecter to collect as much light as possible. Clear glass is just as important. a 50mm front lense with shit glass is going to diffuse the light and give you a poor sight picture. Unfortuantley, for those two features you will PAY, but it will give you years of service.

I checked my traps and had another skunk in one. Used a really small pen light to shed some light on the skunk then popped him in the head with the red dot. You can't see black crosshairs on black varmints in low light. the scope I have is 4 power, has large lenses and gathers a lot of light. Doesn't have anything written on it identifying which model it is. I had one of the smaller red dot sights on another 10/22 but got rid of it. I kept forgetting to turn the sight off when I wasn't using it. It's a pain in the ass when your battery is dead and you realize the last time you used it you for got to turn it off.
I have laser sights on a couple of pistols but haven't used them much. Had one on a Glock 33 that malfunctioned and I haven't gotten around to send it back to the place I bought it from.

No, that would be the Marlin Golden 39A (pre-crossbolt safety preferably).
FWIW, I use a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 .22 scope which I've found to be a great value.

actually haven't shot it in a while, but just guessing, I'd have to say no...I know .22 shorts won't cycle the action of my Ruger Mklll, that's OK though 'cause their extra quiet...::)

I love my 60. But if you want to shoot them all go with the 39A, shorts, longs, and long rifle. Then you can shoot these.

Works exceptionally well on coons.
For bait take a section of 1x4 about 6-7 inches long and snap it in half lengthwise.
Ingredients: A few almonds, and a dab of peanut butter, (use a punctured fish oil caplet for greater range).
Press the almonds into 1/2 tbsp of peanut butter between one end of the boards, and put an elastic band around the middle of the boards (almonds, and peanut butter are now sandwiched between the two boards at one end, with the elastic band holding it all together).
Take the bait board (it will be light enough), and carefully lay approx 1/3 of it down on top of the cage trigger plate leaving the excess board length towards the back of the cage. Make sure the cage is flat and stable.
You now have a coon catching machine.
