the transmission is clearly exposed. a few good shots and it's not a truck anymore, it's just a small cabin.

good point chad... also the driveshafts look pretty wimpy to me, especially for a truck that big.

Why not start with an M54a2? This gives you the multifuel engine, 6 wheel drive, and a much sturdier drivetrain than a C70.

That's the transfer case which appears to lack a sufficient skid plate. Hitting a big rock just right would kill it as well.

personally i would still prefer a Mercedes Benz UNIMOG. even the older ones are almost unstoppable, and easily outfitted to your personal needs... sometimes you can get them under $15000 in good shape. lots of capabilities too with front and rear PTO's and front/rear pneumatics available.

In the future, if one is 'on the road' (iow a refugee) one is extremely vulnerable and is likely to be toast sooner rather than later.
Imagine this scenario - SHTF and virtually every bridge becomes a toll bridge controlled by whatever warlord/group controls that immediate area.

with a 150 gallon gas tank, if that got hit, it'd go up like a roman candle

Storage wise seems great but the security part of it does not seem good. Decent start though...

Yeah the transfer-case is really going to be suspect.

IMHO, if you've got front an rear lockers with decent size tires that you can air down for a larger foot print and any kind of a lift and a way to keep air going to your motor you could go anywhere. Also a shorter wheel base versus a longer wheel base is better.
For example my truck which is a diesel.
Pro's
1 - Great Cummins diesel motor
2 - 5 inch lift, not huge, but allows me ground clearense
3 - 37 inch mud tires that are 13.5 inches wide
4 - Air intake is high. In the picture it's around where the head light is so it's about 3 feet off the ground
5 - Short wheelbase for a truck, it allows for better angles up obsticals
Cons
1 - That diesel motor is about 500 lbs heavier than a normal gasser
2 - It still need to get an air locker for the front
3 - The automatic tranny. It needs to be upgraded to a Suncoast
4 - The suspension needs to be upgraded to a Carli 6 inch lift. Knowing what I know now, this won't be too expensive
5 - Needs to be able to use biofuel, which from what I've seen is very expensive for the conversion
Overall my opinion is that a doom/survival vehicle needs to have a snorkel, locking differentials, large tires, lift and a diesel motor.

general, you need to watch this...parts 2 and 3 as well. then you will understand my love of unimogs. they will meet all your criteria and more...seriously, give it a view...i'm sure you can appreciate the beauty of these machines...
granted, the newer ones are not for the light of wallet, but the older ones are amazingly capable and affordable as well...

FS, thank you, but no I have not, but I've been around the block regarding off road and I'm not worried about off roading the diesel, I'm already pretty sure of what it can do. However, I know from my experience with my 87 Nissan, it would probably do better than this truck in the short run but break in half. Independent front suspensions, you love them until the teeth on the torsion bars tell you to go fuck yourself.
Life and everything should be the KISS method, keep it simple stupid. Like the Unimog, straight fucking axle, it works. IFS is for pussies that want a "slightly" better ride. The cummins won't be a beast off road because the way it makes power, i.e. turbo lag, but it WILL get where I need to go, and holding the break while the turbo spins up can do wonders.
