I'm a fan of British comedy. Being Australian, the British wit is well understood by us down here. I especially like Pantomine type comedy and for the most part early British TV comedy was basically stage pantomine transfered directly to the TV studio.

One of my favourites is the old classic Dad's Army. It's been on re-run here for the last couple months and I enjoy the silly acted out humour. Dad's Army is a SitCom based on the British WWII Home Guard. Old men and young men too old or considered to essential to draft were signed up to guard the home front. It's good clean humour.

Corporal Jack Jones was one of the main charcters. A bumbling old Corporal who fought in the Boer war and WWI. He had lots of pointless rambling stories of war time. Mostly in the Sudan against the fuzzy wuzzies.

When ever anything went wrong Jones would get all agitated and start walking himself in a circle calling out "Don't Panic, Don't Panic Mister Mannering (mainwaring) Don't Panic.

His other favourite saying was when reaching for his bayonette, "They don't like it up em, they don't like it up em".

He did a lot of his own stunts on the show and it was surpsrising just how agile he was. I guess you could say he was a bit slapstick.

Not the best example but never mind.

Anyway I enjoy watching Clive Dunn as Corporal Jones. Thanks mate!

A young Australian soldier had arrived at the front after basic training and reported to his commanding officer. The officer acknowldged the young soldier and turning to look out over the battle field asked him, "Have you come to die?"

To which the young soldier replied, "No Sir, I came yester-die".

That was Blackadder!

Four series in all. I think those two were in Series III and IV together. House (Hugh Laurie) was Prince George in III and a Lieutenant (?) in IV. I've been watching a bit of that as well. Poor Baldrick.

I think the funniest episodes for me were the ones with Stephen Fry as Lord Melchett and General Melchett. When Speckled Jim his pidgeon was eaten by Blackadder in series IV and he was tried in court martial. Also when he was the Duke of Wellington out for satisfaction from the Prince for defiling his daughters in series III.

Wiki quote

The names of Blackadder's firing squad are a reference by writer Ben Elton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Elton) to the classic sitcom Dad's Army (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dad%27s_Army).

Guess who got a guernsey in that one... Corporal Jones.
