NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – In the wake of superstorm Sandy (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/guide/where-to-donate-or-volunteer-to-sandy-relief-effort/), reports of lootings (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/11/02/looting-becomes-problem-on-long-islands-south-shore-lipa-under-half-a-million-outages/)across the Tri-State have been widespread.
Areas hit especially hard by Sandy (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/relief/) continue to deal with dealing with lawlessness.
Rockaways (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/11/03/the-best-and-worst-of-humanity-on-display-in-the-rockaways-volunteers-reach-out-while-looters-terrorize-storm-victims/)residents told 1010 WINS reporter Gary Baumgarten that looting and thievery have become such serious threats that taking up arms and fleeing town are the best options for staying safe.
“If you got bags coming in and they see that they can rob you,” said Thomas, who plans on taking a bus out of the Rockaways (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/11/01/devastated-rockaway-residents-fear-more-looting/).
