The instrument is a Hang drum. Here is some info on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hang_drum
It isn't exactly a drum. It's a multitasker. Has elements of guitar, chimes, gamelan, marimba, steel drum, kanoun, and more. Developed in Basel, Switzerland. These guys make hypnotic music suitable for meditation.

You know I actually think there is a complete disconnect between what they are playing, and what we're hearing. Neither of them is repeatedly thumping out a base line, yet it is present. For the life of me I can't figure out a consistent idea of what the second guy is adding. He's tapping semi regular 16th notes, or ghosted 8ths even?, yet I can't even make out dependable quarter notes.
Cool instrument just the same.

Ok, I can visualize the syncopation much better in this vid. Perhaps the audio was off for me in the last one.

That thing is a bit of a trip out device. I'm thinking of the perfect place for one.
;)
Here's the redneck version...not bad.

Those are some really cool sounding drums, Hatha Sunahara. Those guys are so into it, too, which makes it that much more enjoyable. I particularly liked the wrist flare that the dude on the right gives every once in a while. He looks like he's having so much fun.

It's the array Mbira. Sounds like a cross between a piano and a marimba.

Here is a Kantele, which is the national instument of Finland, played with a Theremin, an electronic instrument developed by Leon Theramin, a Russian in 1928. Puts out some really beautiful etheric music:

Read the description below the YouTube video and you'll get the J. R. R. Tolkien connection.

Thanks. I meant to look that up but got side tracked. Anything over $3000, and I'd make one myself!
