LONDON — Israel has been selling weapons to several allies in South and Central America.

Industry sources said Israel has maintained arms and training projects with several countries in South America over the last two years. They cited such clients as Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador and Honduras.
“This is a relatively small but vital market for Israeli influence,” a diplomat said. The sources said several South American states were purchasing Israeli military surplus. In 2012, Honduras was negotiating to purchase a range of weapons from the Israel Army, including the Galil and Tavor assault rifles. Chile has also been engaged in a strategic relationship with Israel. In addition to arms deals, Chile and Israel were said to have conducted an intelligence exchange and security cooperation.
The U.S. embassy in Santiago referred to the Chile-Israel defense relationship in a cable in 2008. An embassy cable released by WikiLeaks reported that Chile and Israel were cooperating in monitoring Iranian activities in such countries of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.
In Brazil, Israel has sold unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft upgrades by such companies as Elbit Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries.
