View Full Version : Depression 2013 - Layoffs Since The Election

mamboni
10th November 2012, 08:59 PM
mamboni comments: not only are we losing thousands of jobs, these are generally high-skill high-wage jobs. We are becoming a nation of part-time workers, waitresses, burger flippers and as many millions on welfare, SNAP, disability, SSI and public pensions. The federal deficits are going to explode and never come down for years. There is no way this will not lead to dollar devaluation and inflation. The only money velocity will be government transfer payments and workers surviving on only gas, food and rent. The US economy is one gigantic Ponzi rolled into a bubble and wrapped in a bureaucratic shell game.

Layoffs Since The Election

09Nov

To the Obama ass-kissers: Before any of you show the world how stupid you really are and post stupid comments about how these layoffs aren’t due to Obama winning the election carefully READ the headline and the article .

How Many Businesses Have Announced Closings or Layoffs Since Obama Won A Second Term? (http://www.theblaze.com/stories/how-many-businesses-have-announced-closings-or-lay-offs-since-obama-won-a-second-term/)

Do elections have consequences? If you have been paying attention to the financial markets (http://www.theblaze.com/stories/market-recap-stocks-smashed-for-second-day-in-a-row/), you might think so. Wall Street has had two horrible days since President Obama won a second term.
However, stock prices are not the only thing taking a hit. It appears that the job market is also suffering. In the last 48 hours, the following major corporations have announced layoffs in America (links take you to news stories about the layoffs – with details from the companies):

So far I've seen Papa John's and Applebees threatening to fire people since their choice didn't win the election. Disgusting on either side.

Among the commandments of life under the Obama administration: thou shalt not speak ill of Obamacare. Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter was hammered with Twitter abuse (http://twitchy.com/2012/08/09/papa-johns-becomes-latest-boycott-target-after-opposing-obamacare-class-warfare-ensues/) after informing shareholders and franchisees in August that implementing Obamacare would necessarily increase costs of running the business. Applebee’s is under the gun today after Zane Tankel, a franchisee whose company runs 40 New York-area restaurants, told Fox Business Network that a hiring freeze might be in the works (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/09/zane-tankel-applebees-obamacare_n_2094568.html).

Note that in his TV appearance Tankel did not say he was laying off any employees; rather, he speculated that “if it’s possible to do without cutting people back, I am delighted to do it, but that also rolls back expansion, it rolls back hiring more people, and in a best-case scenario, we only shrink the labor force minimally. Best case.” What a monster, huh?

Um, no. Again, Tankel said only that, faced with paying annual Obamacare penalties of $80,000 to $100,000 per restaurant, he was evaluating his options and would most likely halt expansion. It seems reading comprehension is tough, so we wonder how these people accusing Applebee’s of firing employees made it through all 2,700 pages of the Obamacare bill (like Nancy Pelosi did (http://twitchy.com/2012/10/15/lying-liar-nancy-pelosi-duh-of-course-i-read-the-obamacare-bill-to-find-out-what-was-in-it/)) to find out what was in it and how much it would cost other people’s businesses.
For its part, the Applebee’s corporate office was anxious to distance itself from the Obamacare controversy and point out that franchisees speak for themselves.

Would you let this person replace your knee, perform open heart surgery on you, or accept his diagnosis of malignant melanoma and leg amputation?

The expectation is that alternative energy jobs will increase...

a while back I read that the sector had been booming due to all the gov subsidies/grants in favor of green energy... hence it is a bubble.

The United States alone is sitting on 1000 years of oil and gas reserves that are economical to develop. Any dollars invested in green technologies are dollars wasted as green energy costs multiples per kilowatt hour vis-a-vis oil and gas. The entire inpetus for green energy is the whacky junk theory called anthropogenic global warming. This is malinvestment on a grand scale and it will likely result in destruction of the western economies.

between Obama fvcking up the economy (and the quality of health care) with Obamacare, and Microsoft's recent abortions-posing-as-Operating-Systems ... it's like watching the country commit Hari-Kari.

i wouldn't be surprised if, in 4 years,
A/ Linux is the #1 installed ap on Desktops & Laptops, followed by Apple, followed by Microsoft.
B/ US real unemployment is around 30%.

but, "health care professionals" will have jobs - the actual purpose of Obamacare. that is not a jab at real doctors & nurses - it is a comment on hospital administrations & health insurance companies ... the same people who wrote the Obama-care law.

Obamacare tax increases could lead to massive layoffs

The reelection of Pres. Barack Obama has basically killed the momentum to overturn Obamacare (http://www.examiner.com/topic/obamacare). Now businesses are scrambling to deal with the 20 or more higher taxes as a result of the legislation, ranging from a $123 billion surtax on investment income to the $20 billion medical device tax.

A number of companies have announced layoffs as a result of the new taxes associated with the health care law.
Welch Allyn, a company that manufactures medical diagnostic equipment in New York, announced a layoff of 275 employees, about 10 percent of their workforce, over the next three years.

Dana Holding Corp., a global auto parts manufacturing company in Ohio, warned of $24 million in cuts over the next six years due to additional U.S. health care expenses.

Stryker, one of the biggest medical device manufacturers in the world, is eliminating 96 jobs in December and more worldwide.
Boston Scientific announced it is cutting anywhere from 1,200 to 1,400 jobs and shifting investments and workers overseas.
Medtronic, a medical device maker, cut 500 jobs over the summer and plan another 500 for the end of 2013.
Other companies that have announced layoffs due to Obamacare include:

Smith & Nephew - 770 layoffs
Abbott Labs - 700 layoffs
Covidien - 595 layoffs
Kinetic Concepts - 427 layoffs
St. June Medical - 300 layoffs
Hill Rom - 200 layoffs

In addition to the elimination of a number of America jobs is a shift from full-time to part-time workers.
A Florida restaurateur who operates roughly 40 Denny’s locations and five Hurricane Grill & Wings franchises intends to add a 5 percent surcharge to customers’ bills and slash most of the staff's time to fewer than 30 hours per week to offset costs beginning in January 2014 when the Affordable Care Act (http://housedocs.house.gov/energycommerce/ppacacon.pdf)is fully implemented.

Likewise, Applebee's and Papa John's have both announced the implementation of Obamacare could lead to damaging cuts in their worksforces. According to the new law, employers with 50 or more employees must provide government-mandated healthcare or risk a $2,000 fine.

Other companies looking to limit the hours of its workers include Darden Restaurants, owners of Red Lobster, Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse; JANCOA Janitorial Services, and Kroger

These are just a few of the Obamacare taxes set to take effect in 2013:

Medical device tax - a 2.3 percent excise tax on gross sales
“Special Needs Kids” tax - puts a $2,500 cap on Flexible Spending Accounts
Surtax on investment income - a new 3.8% surtax on investment income for individuals making at least $200,000 (households $250,000)
“Haircut” for medical itemized deductions - raises the threshold to deduct medical expenses from 7.5% of adjusted gross income (AGI) to 10 percent
Medicare payroll tax hike - raises Medicare payroll tax from 2.9% to 3.8%

My guess is that some of larger companies had bets placed thru special interest on Romney's win,

now they won't see any of it back. Along with the increase in taxes.
