He might have a point, no? Is there hard data to support seatbelts saving lifes and preventing injuries?

Seat belts on airplanes are mostly for turbulence, not for crashes. In a severe turbulence loss of altitude, there is risk of having your head slam into the ceiling of the plane. There is tremendous evidence for seat belts preventing injuries, as flight attendants sustain them far more frequently. It's frightening that the CEO of an airline doesn't know this.

I've been in a few car accidents while wearing my seat belt - it DOES make a difference. My mother was killed in a car accident which she surely would have survived if she had worn a seat belt.

True, seat belts on airliners are mostly for turbulence, however while seat belts have nearly zero effect on surviving a 'flying into the ground nose first' sort of crash, most aircraft crashes are on take-off and landings, and seat belts are definitely responsible for reducing injuries and deaths in 'skidding across the ground' sort of impacts.
Additionally, if one survives a 'hard landing' (i.e. skidding on the ground upon impact) and one doesn't have an escape hood on their person then the chances of surviving the smoke from the subsequent fire aren't very good - which is why I carry an escape hood in a fanny pack when I fly (AND I wear hiking boots so I'm much less likely to lose my shoes). So yeah, it's pretty pointless to be wearing your seat belt upon a hard landing if you don't have an escape hood. lol

Just wear a jump suit made out of passport book material. You will be invincible.
