Gilbert Strode of Kentucky allegedly stole a 700-pound burial vault because he wanted to sell it for scrap. The vault reportedly fell from his vehicle during a high-speed police chase.

A Kentucky man is accused of robbing the dead after reportedly leading police on a high-speed chase with a burial vault in his truck.

Gilbert Strode, 52, was arrested for allegedly stealing a newly delivered 700-pound metal burial vault. The chamber, which was to be used at a funeral this week, reportedly raced down streets in the back of the suspect’s truck as he tried to evade the police across 10 miles.

Police spotted Strode with the stolen vault, which they believe he wanted to sell for scrap, after a witness tipped them off Monday night, said Bracken County Sheriff Howard Niemeier. Bracken County is about 60 miles from Lexington.

“We got an anonymous call that someone was trying to sell a casket vault,” Niemeier told the Daily News. “Based on that information, we went looking for him and found him just outside of Augusta.”

When Strode realized the cops were after him Monday night, he reportedly put his truck into gear and sped off. During the ensuing chase, the heavy vault fell from his vehicle, according to deputies.

The pursuit came to a halt when officers apprehended Strode in Mason County. The suspect told the police that he purchased the vault himself, according to Niemeier.

Strode was booked at the Mason County Detention Center, where he is being held on a $2,500 bond. He was charged with wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police, speeding and receiving stolen property, according to authorities.

His court date is Nov. 13.

The vault had been recently taken to St. Augustine Cemetery for a funeral. It was replaced in time for the funeral, reported NBC-affiliate LEX 18.
