i have a good friend whose son was just appointed to the merchant marine academy. he'll be leaving after hs graduation this spring. his other daughter was appointed to the coast guard academy. at the time, i got her a coast guard .999 round as a graduation present. i'd like to do the same for him, only a merchant marine type one. i can't find anything.

if anyone happens to stumble across a merchant marine .999 round somewhere, could you please post the link here or pm? thanks much.

A marine friend had gotten into King's Point out of high school. He arrived in his mothers' chauffeured limo with her along. She approached some upper class students and asked if they would take care of her little boy.

He didn't last two weeks there.

Hi Chad. I couldn’t find any silver rounds but on eBay I did find 12 items with “merchant marine silver” and 16 items with “merchant marine coin“.

Hope this helps

Best wishes,

agnut

Isn't it bad luck to bring silver onto a vessel?

Isn't it bad luck to bring silver onto a vessel?

Not to my knowledge.

But it is considered bad luck to bring a women on board.

Aye, indeed it is! The risk of the vessel sinking is directly proportional to the amount of silver brought on board. It is almost guaranteed to sink in a very deep and generally inaccessible part of the lake or sea, if an entire life savings of a silver bug is brought on board, and that goes for boats that should be able to take a far higher load as well!

I'm guessing a Titanic commemorative proof's probably not appropriate. Has Perth mint done something that might fit?

Maybe we can track down something like one of these:
200th Anniversary of the War 1812: How USS Constitution became Old Ironsides (http://blog.perthmint.com.au/2012/06/18/200th-anniversary-of-the-war-of-1812-how-uss-constitution-became-known-as-old-ironsides/)

Ships that changed the World Collection includes:
Cutty Sark, USS Constitution, Mayflower, Golden Hind, Santa Maria

USS Constitution and Golden Hind still available at the Perth Mint (http://www.perthmint.com.au/catalogue/ships-that-changed-the-world.aspx), otherwise you'd need to hunt around

Australia Post seems to think they have Mayflowers in stock (http://shop.auspost.com.au/collectables/coins/the-perth-mint/ships-that-changed-the-world/sku/1613655) but somewhere US would be better.

I just notice that collection is for Tuvalu.
