The future success of California and the nation lies in successfully educating Latinos so they can bolster an increasingly skilled workforce, according to speakers at a forum put on by California Assemblyman Das Williams Tuesday at Ventura College (http://www.vcstar.com/news/topic/ventura-college/).

"While Latino college completion rates are important in the United States, they are even more so in California with the highest population of Latinos in the United States," Williams said. "Only 16 percent of Latinos have college degrees. If this continues we will not have the skilled workforce we need to depend on for the future."


The forum, titled "Improving Latino College Completion: Promising Policy and Practice," featured presentations by various educators, including new California Community Colleges Chancellor Brice Harris. He called on Williams and newly elected state Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson (http://www.vcstar.com/news/topic/hannah-beth-jackson/) to focus on repairing the damage done by years of cuts to the state's community college system.


"We need to focus on restoring access to higher education. In the past four to five years we've cut enrollment from 2.9 million to 2.4 million," Harris said, explaining that 500,000 students are no longer being served by the state community college system. He said the system would have been serving more than 3 million students by this time if it weren't for the cuts in classes. He also called for restoring classes so students can move through the system "in an expeditious manner."


Jackson agreed and said one of her goals in the state Legislature is "repairing the damage" done to the state's educational system through drastic cuts the past few years, which she said extends to high school.

"One of the beauties of the community college system has been the ability to access the community colleges in high school," she said. "I think the focus is on repairing the damage and getting California back on track. We need to get Latino students enrolled to become well-educated. The key to success is an education."


Others at the forum, including Brice, called for creating integrated standards from high school to college, noting that for many Hispanic students the gap between expectations of the two entities can be confusing, and ultimately detrimental. "We need to have our curriculum alignments better. It's not fair to have one set of expectations that are different in high school than in college," Brice said, pointing to math standards. He noted that students can complete their math requirements in high school for graduation by their sophomore year, only to find when they go to college that they are considered deficient and need to take remedial courses.


Xilonon Cruz-Gonzalez, president of the California Latino School Boards Association and board member of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, said that only about 35 percent of students who are placed in a remedial course one level below the minimum college-level math courses will complete their higher education. That drops to 6 percent of those three to four remedial levels behind in math. Cruz-Gonzalez said that more than half of Latinos entering college are three to four levels behind in math.


The importance of educating the Latino population becomes even more pressing when looking at the raw statistics, which were provided by Frank Wen, manager of research and analysis of the Southern California Association of Governments. He said the SCAG area, which comprises Ventura, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange and Imperial counties, contains about 6 percent of the population of the United States. He said the area is already experiencing the trends of a growing Latino population, as well as a rapidly growing aging population, which will need to be supported by those in the workforce.


Another issue was raised by Katie Hern, director of the California Acceleration Project, who called for relaxing some of the standards for math for students. She questioned why students who are not planning to major in science or math fields need to know as much algebra as is currently required. Others at the forum included Michelle Camacho Liu, education policy associate for the National Conference of State Legislatures, who spoke about the importance of applying the abundant data to change the current system.


Eloy Ortiz Oakley, president-superintendent of Long Beach Community College District, outlined the district's Promise Pathways program and said funding is an issue for the program where the majority of students are attending school with their fees waived. He said one of the fundamental goals of the program is working with students starting in kindergarten to prepare them and their families for higher education.

Pretty much the entire article can be summed up as a call to reduce standards and requirements to get college degrees. This is dangerous and doesn't help anybody except the tiny subset of students who get degrees while those degrees still are considered to mean something.

Personally, I'm all for giving access to college to worthy students willing to succeed and better themselves. However, there is literally no amount of money you can spend to fix a cultural issue. Passing people through school who do no work and learn nothing only reduces the value of all college degrees in that field. When this is done it promotes laziness, half-assness, lack of self responsibility, and parasitic behavior throughout all of society.

There seem to be countries out there where no one really cares about their job, and everyone just does the bare minimum. Even if someone wants to solve the hard problems and do great things, they have to fight everyone around them.

I just went through college and learned absolutely fucking nothing, other than how fucked White people are. Everything is so dumbed down that they don't "teach" anything relevant to the job. A lot of my classes were about diversity and how White people are all Evil.

On my final college project I was assigned to be with 3 illegals and NONE of them knew how to make an information system (my major.) They really didn't teach students how to do this anyways, but the project was about figuring this shit out on your own. I admit I have an advantage already being a small business owner, but these fucktards expect to get real jobs in the industry and don't research shit on their own, they expect it to be given to them.

I pretty much had to do the entire thing by myself and I asked them to AT LEAST do the PowerPoint, but that was too complicated for them too, so I ended up doing that too. When we gave our presentation they all read from notecards they prepared, and I spoke organically (I don't memorize shit, I speak from the heart.) For the most part all 3 spoke slow, struggling to read just what the wrote on their own cards, and it didn't make sense, and most of it contradicted what was on the PowerPoint slides. When it came to Question and Answer time the 3 of them couldn't answer any of the questions, and they'd always turn to me for the answer. This is the future Latino workforce people.


This wasn't an isolated incident too. I'm just giving you one example. The same pattern existed around my entire time in college.

i have a college degree. it was useful back when i got it, as not everyone had one, and it did serve its purpose in setting you above the crowd. now, there are 10,000 online "colleges," and everyone has one. the retard working at taco bell has one. it means very little anymore. i personally know people working at subway, stocking grocery store shelves, etc. that have college degrees. much more worthwhile to get a trade skill or something like a nursing license (or whatever it is). at least then you can save somebodies life, weld a pipe, etc. going for a degree that qualifies you to work in a company that has been shipped to china is idiocy in 2012.

Well, it gets worse. Gene Roddenberry's real name was Golan Roddenstein. His original story as basis for the TV series was actually titled Shekel Trek. But the producers thought it too Jewish for mainstream America at the time.
