Michigan approves concealed weapons in schools, churches

"Michigan passed a law Friday that will allow the carrying of concealed weapons in previously off-limits areas including schools, churches, day cares and sports stadiums.

The bill cleared the Senate on Thursday, and was approved by the Republican-controlled House Friday, the same day that 27 people, including 20 children, were killed by gunfire at a Connecticut school.

"If you have pistol free zones they are actually mass murderer empowerment zones," said Steve Dulan, attorney for the Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners, who represents sportsman clubs throughout Michigan backing the bill.

"If you actually look at the history, even over the past 10 years in the US, you find that maybe all but one mass shooting has occurred in a so-called gun free zone," he added.

Another provision in the bill eliminates county-controlled concealed weapons licensing boards, having sheriffs assume their duties instead, Click On Detroit reported (http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/Bill-expanding-concealed-carry-access-passed-by-Michigan-Legislature/-/1719418/17774324/-/9sha88/-/index.html).

The current law in Michigan prohibited concealed weapons in schools, churches, day cares, hospitals, dorms, casinos and any public entertainment venue that had a capacity of over 2,500 people, according to Petoskey News (http://www.petoskeynews.com/news/featured/pnr-bill-allowing-guns-in-michigan-schools-churches-heads-to-governor-20121214,0,6783106.story). Violating the law earned a civil infraction and a $500 fine, as well as a six-month suspension of a concealed pistol license.

The new law allows schools and private establishments to voluntarily stay pistol-free if they choose to, Petoskey News reported, but opponents say it goes too far, Click on Detroit reported.

The bill is now headed to the state's governor Rick Snyder to be signed, but he told local Channel 4 that is taking a week to review the law's language, especially in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting.

I think Americans should be encouraged to open carry handguns, and all restrictions on concealed carry should be removed. If we're going to live in the wild west, we should at least have a level playing field, and a way to stop crazy people from doing a whole lot of damage. We also need to demilitarize the police which would remove any temptation for them to regard themselves as being above the law, and to think twice before they kill somebody for trivial reasons. Police would be more respectful of the public if they were always surrounded by a well armed public. They need to assure 'officer safety' by using their brains first, and not their guns. If people took more responsibility in protecting themselves, we wouldn't need so many cops who don't protect us anyway, but rather use their authority to collect revenue for a corrupt judicial and political system that preys upon its citizens.

I just looked up the requirements for a concealed carry license. It appears simple. One 2.5 hour class on the law and a $65 fee for a license good for four years and criminal history investigation. I'm seriously thinking of getting such a license if the limitations are not too disadvantageous to protecting ones self. License issued by the local sherrif.

I talked to the principle of my kids school this AM. we are in a very rural area, 150 kids in the school, I asked her what kind of precautions are you taking? ( copy cat killers you know) her reply, we are trying to be normal , being diligent and we have a physiology counselor on site, I said that's all fine and dandy, but its to bad you can't keep a shotgun in the main office... she didn't have anything to say about that.... My 7 year old has no idea about the killings, But dam I want her to be smart and prepared so she can live through this kinda crap, Its very sad that your 6 or 7 year old has to be scared to go to Public school.

Concealed weapons are a great deterrent to the criminally minded.

he caved in to the pressure, I'd heard earlier today the phone calls and emails to his office were 6 to 1 against signing it into law

Snyder is a Jewish name.

I watched as our lying tv reporter said "of course there is no evidence that guns in citizens hands have any deterrent effect".

There is a mountain of evidence, all the evidence points to more guns lower crime.

I've carried many, many times without regard to said laws, the 2cnd amendment was my guiding "law". I really hesitate to register myself as a CCW and put myself in their database.

Maybe, but I would say another Jews media lie.

The media's business is to manufacture consent. They only point the camera in the direction "they" are going.

Good points LT. The only downside of breaking the CCW law is if you have to use your handgun, and then it isn't as severe as the consequences of not having the weapon. Better to ask forgiveness than permission. I've always believed that.

Is it better to be carried by six than judged by 12? IDK? I just have a hard time with that decision because in my mind the 2cnd gives me the right to protect myself with a firearm. What if I started carrying a machete?
