The National Rifle Association on Tuesday broke its silence on last Friday's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., denouncing the "horrific and senseless murders" and vowing to "help make sure this never happens again." Facing a fierce push for new restrictions on gun ownership (http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/sandy-hook-survivor-dad-nra-help-u-safe-180257437--politics.html) in the tragedy’s aftermath, the group said it would hold "a major news conference" in Washington on Friday. It did not elaborate.
"The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters—and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown," the organization said in a statement emailed to reporters.
"The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again," it said.
In keeping with its past practice after other mass shootings, the NRA kept quiet after the killings of 20 children and six adults at the school, plus the gunman's mother. Gun control advocates, however, have ramped up calls for new restrictions to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. And President Barack Obama himself has called for a strong response (http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/white-house-president-supports-assault-weapons-ban-other-210135332--politics.html) to the massacre.
"Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting," the NRA said in its statement.

Rather than gun bans society would do better to ban soda pop and vaccinations (on the theory that a reduction of crazies would be more valuable than their access to weapons)

I'm sure a sensible compromise will be offered such as mandatory gun registration. They can then tout their success to NRA donors as having saved them from an outright ban on ownership of their evil black rifles.

I'm glad I've never given a single red FRN to the NRA. Back when I purchased my first weapon I was given some NRA information. I stupidly filled it out (This was before I did any actual research on the organization. By the time they responded I had done my reading and told them to go ahead and cancel my application. They asked why, I said because I don't want to deal with an organization that will compromise my rights for political favors. I read about the 1986 automatic weapons ban, and the 1994 Assault Weapon ban. You guys were instrumental in both.

No Thanks

I ran across a Scottish newspaper article concerning their NRA circa 1860 ... it has British origins.

I can tell Im gonna be a pissed off sob this Friday. too bad I sold everything I had via gunshow loophole this past weekend, beats getting current scrap, .02 cents. Kind of starting to feel like DOOM is actually really 6-9 months away this time.
