The second amendment was written at a time when everyone had experienced the tyranny of the rule of George III of England. No one wanted a government that governed by force of arms as did the British tyrant. So, as a preventative measure, they were all in favor of deterring another tyranny from arising, and having an armed citizenry was that deterrent.

Today we have a government that is hell bent on ruling by the force of arms. We have militarized police. We have a war on terror, and a war on drugs that are both thin disguises for a war on the people. We have the world's largest prison population by far. We have a huge percentage of our gross national product spent on arming an imperial military to rule the globe. Our politicians all profit from their favors to corporations and banks and are all fascists regardless of whether they are republicans or democrats. Our media informs us only of the agenda of the money power. Our schools brainwash us from infancy to the grave. But we still have the second amendment--which is the only protection we have from a government that claims to protect us--a claim which is about as credible as Mayor Bloomberg's claim that he is a champion of the second amendment. The mayor represents the ruling oligarchical plutocracy not the people.
