20. Bad customs of the ancients.

The maxims laid down in this chapter, — those sacred precepts of nature, — were for a long time unknown to nations. The ancients had no notion of any duty they owed to nations with whom they were not united by treaties of friendship. Simple words such as "person" "citizen" "people" "or" "nation" "crime" "charge" "right" "statute" "preferred" "prefer" "constitutor" "creditor" "debtor" "debit" "discharge" "payment" "law" and "United States" doesn't mean what we think it does because we were never taught the legal definitions of the above words.

The Law of Nations is to apply to whatever form of government you choose or none at all if that trips your trigger. All it attempts to do is lay down certain principles that have come to be regarded as 'law'. The REASON they are called laws is not because they cannot be violated but rather that should you decide to violate them then the violation comes with an intrinsic punishment. The punishment is nothing that is ordained. It just happens.

Say you were the most anarchistic person on the face of the earth and you choose to ignore these general guidelines in your personal conduct. Do so at your peril. These codes are not enforced by any particular nation in the world but rather by all of them.




In this treatise it will appear, in what manner States, as such, ought to regulate all their actions. We shall examine the obligations of a people as well towards themselves as towards other nations; and by that means we shall discover the Rights which result from these obligations.
