I had some time today and had 5 cs of aluminum bottles and some old copper tubing, I thought I'd just run over there real quick and cash it in. WRONG! 1st off I could hardly get into the place because of the line that had formed ON the highway in both direction and that line was at a crawl. Going at that pace it took me 1 hour to get to the weigh station part of it, so I weighed my stuff and was given a form to fill out and a receipt and was directed to the building across the lot.
Here's where it gets interesting...I'm standing in front of a one way mirror, so ya can't see who you're talking to. I'm given another form to fill out along with providing my ID, after she inputs me into the system I'm then directed to sign a digital signature and then a digital thumbprint, after that I'm asked to take off my hat for a digital headshot pic!
After all that I'm given a card to take to the ATM around the corner and across the lot where I put the card in and it gives me the cash and keeps the card.
Does the TSA run the scrap yards now?!
WTF?
The last time I sold scrap aluminum it was a piece of cake but I did NOT expect this and I will NOT be returning. America ain't America anymore :( Like I didn't already know that....

All the stolen electrical lines from repo'd homes, the aluminum fins from A/C units etc etc end up at scrap yards, so how else can they track down the people that steal this crap? It is just a sign of the times. The quote by William Penn comes to mind "men must be governed by God or they will be ruled by tyrants". We live in a godless age, and it won't get any better.
People always get the government they deserve. Ask yourself which came first, the police state or the moral decay?

LS, it's pretty obvious who comes in with what, it's called common sense. There ain't no way in hell the crap I brought in was stolen and wasn't worth shit. If I had bundles of wire and fins etc then I could understand but not the lowly crap I had.

"Keeping track of thieves bringing in stolen A/C parts, copper pipe & wiring, etc." is just an excuse - the deal here is that collecting and selling scrap metal is (WAS) one of the last ways one can (COULD) earn a living completely 'off the grid' free from Big Sis (NOT ANY MORE).

Sorry to hear of your problems, I think you would have to go through something like that here also.
In the last year or so the law has been cracking down on scrap yards trying to slow down the epidemic theft rate in this area. Here in my area the thieves have gotten very bad as far as scrap goes. A/C units, house wiring and plumbing at unocupied houses/buildings and new construction.
That the law has been changed that Id is required for copper/aluminum and I think for other metals also. Tho I suspect that some yards still have a back door for some of the stuff that is stolen.
The system you described is WAY more complicated than here, all they ask for and record is your id info.
It is a pain in the ass to have to deal with this kind of crap for the honest people that go to the yards. I wonder if you would have to go through the same thing if you were only bringing in cans only?

Everyone gets the exact same treatment here.

It didn't matter what you had, alum cans or trailers of steel. It was like a processing station.

Sounds like you were lucky you didn't get a cavity search.
I know theft is at an all time high, this sounds over the top though.
Won't be long now before digital thumbprints and photos will be taken for ammo sales. An ID is not good enough anymore.
The national database needs fresh photos and prints.

This is the exact model that will be used for guns, ammo etc. Pretty damn high tech for a scrap yard! One would think that there was gold/silver and military stuff there!

Suprised it isn't already?
If a few metal thieves warrented this kind of security, why isn't it already being used because of mass shootings?

not perhaps.
there is a LOOOOOOOOOOOT of stolen scrap metal.
there's almost as many 'stolen scrap metal' news stories as there are Chimp Out news stories.
i'm still waiting for 2 targets in San Francisco to be hit -
* 2 ton bronze sculpture near City Hall. just begging to be stolen.
* Russian Orthodox church at Geary & 25th ... with a Gold Leaf roof.
i remember when scrapping was "Cash on the Barrelhead".
this is the Reagan-Bush-Clinton-Bush-Obama Globalized economy - what's left of it.
i like the compromise a local scrap metal place does -
* cash for steel scrap & anything under $10
* for larger amounts, they wait about 5 days & send you a check - which you can take to a bank and cash.
i think it's a fair compromise. but i do miss the 'old days' of scrapping.

Ding! Ding! Ding!
I personally had a ex mother in law that used to dumpster dive for cans and the woman was worth over 5 million
She had friends that use to made enough monthly income to supplement their SSI and lived quite well
I also read articles about how the state was pissed that people werent paying taxes on bottles They collected and it was unfaor
