My father (RIP) hit those beaches on DDay +2. Concussion from a shell blast at the Bulge put him in a month long coma and ended his time in Patton's Army. I am convinced beyond any doubt that that head injury was the cause of his Alzheimer's, which did not cause his death. I remember taking him to the VA to see if there could be any disability one year before he passed, but the issue was moot as his service records along with thousands of others from that era were destroyed in a fire at the warehouse in St. Louis were they had been stored. The photos reminded me of the character, ability to smile and family values he exhibited to his last day. They were indeed a Great Generation. May I add the same for my mother, who served in the Women's Air Corps. Although he passed in 2000, for years prior he was disgusted by the state of the country and with sadness knew that it would only become worse and end badly. Thank you for posting this thread....

I don't know. But he told a story, more than once, of a fellow G.I. in Germany that blew his brains out with a .45 pistol. He wasn't sure if it was intentional or accidental. So I'll guess it was a .45, others have asked me about the holster and I know nothing about that either.
He served in Patton's army, doing tank recovery work.
He drank way too much after the war, but he never hurt anyone other than himself.
He told another story, more than once, about a few drunk german soldiers that were walking back to town, unaware the Americans were occupying it. Rather than take them as prisioners, a good many Americans shot 'em up. From the way he told the story, I doubt the Germans saw it comming.
