WTF!!! What was all that wailing and moaning? I couldnt see anyone get hurt during the so called malfunction... People flipping out over trivial incidents shows how much of a slender thread holds us in our cherished delusions!

I can see how people could get hurt because of this. Who would believe that or even imagine it would go into reverse. The unexpected can cause people to panic very easily.
Ever been in traffic at a stop with a huge truck/trailer next to you and you get surprised and hit the brakes in a panic, because you think your vehicle is suddenly moving backwards? But it was only the truck/trailer next to you started moving forward unexpectedly?
Same with the escalator, people are conditioned that the up and down escalators do only that and not decide to go the other way when it should not. The totally unexpected can/will cause panic in some people, depending what the unexpected thing is.
IMHO!

I like how some people jumped off onto the median as if a pit of doom opened up at the bottom, and was gonna swallow them up.
Ahhhhh!!!!...stop!!!....stop!!!

Was that cop searching people while all this was going on?, it did look that way to me........back in Sheram Oaks CA I was on a scalator that did hit a bump, or something, I went down and I cut my middle finger with the sharp edge of the scalator...I was treated very fast and nice........no need to sue anyone.
First post of the day........good morning to one and all.

Wanna here the best part?
All it would have took to stop this is ONE RED BUTTON CLEARY MARKED.
When i travelled in penn station alot you never knew track assigments till the last minute. Most of the time the escalotor was going in the " right " direction but every so often it was going opposite and all the partons would squeezze on to the stair step.
One day this happened and rather then moving with the herd i actually observed what they employees did and itwas a button they pushed to stop it.
The next day i was caught in a similar herding but this time i pushed the red button
What a relief.
Not only was i the first downstairs but i also helped ease congestion. What i find interesting is the masses will undertake all manner of burden until a " authority figure" shows up
Even if the figure did absolutely nothing other then push a big red shiny button clearly marked

Once the escalator stops, everyone walks down. Weren't they trying to get to the top of the stairs? So why not just walk up the stairs? A perfect example of herd mentality, they were all in a heap so they just followed what everyone else was doing. "Is everyone OK over here? Is everyone OK?" LOL, it's not like an escalator stopping is a threat, it's just stairs at that point. HA HA HA!

The people at the top of the line did the right thing by keeping moving up the escalator at a good klip. They prevented a pile up at the bottom of many 100's of pounds of people which would have caused a lot of injury. Would have been some real screams of pain instead of the multiple screams leading up to "I will sue" JMO
