View Full Version : Saw 100,00+ Pounds of Bullet Casings Being Destroyed at Scrap Metal Place

During the last week, I went to a local scrap metal place to see if I could buy some of the empties (empty brass bullet casings) from them.

In a previous visit, I had seen one of the employees sorting through a 55 gallon drum full of brass casings.

By luck, I got a chance to speak with the Guy in Charge.

He said they couldn't sell me the empties - even though I'm willing to pay a substantial mark-up over the brass value of the scrap.

He said they were being paid to destroy 100,000+ pounds of brass bullet casings (I don't want to say the exact number, I don't want to ID the Scrap Metal pro who was nice enough to tell me the truth.)

He showed me an area where they had 25+ Cardboard "Gondola's" - each measuring about 5 feet by 5 feet by 4 1/2 feet high - each stuffed full with brass bullet casings.

He showed me a Gondola with the top off, containing 4000 pounds of crushed brass bullet casings. They weren't fully crushed, like when they crush a car. They were half crushed, but definitely rendered un-usable for re-loading & re-loaders.

I asked him if this is related to US gun control measures. He said it was "bigger than that".

Since the guy was very, very considerate to be so forthcoming, I feel that it's appropriate to mask his identity - by not naming his location.

He said they did not actually own the casings - that they were given the casings to crush, by a third party. He did not name the third party.

I didn't want to over-stay my welcome, or to make the guy uncomfortable. I got a few more questions for him.

CONCLUSION:

The gun grabbers' full-court press is worldwide.

It involves bullets, not just guns.

And, TPTB are putting the Pedal to the Metal. Since December 14, their efforts have obviously increased by 1 or 2 (or 3) orders of magnitude.

The solution is obvious. Some of our members are doing a very honorable job doing what needs to be done, to counter-act the gun-grabbers. A tip of the hat to our Collector Members. :)

As we talk about this, I have some suggestions -
A/ Re-Visit your local scrap metal place, and try to buy some brass bullet casings.

B/ Since many of our Trusted Members wish to keep their locations Secure & Un-disclosed, let us respect that. We can share information without naming the state we live in.

This also protects the scrap metal guys, whose input is Golden. In case G-S.us is being watched by TPTB. My guess is that it is being watched.

C/ Generic-ise the data you post, so that it can not be traced back to a given business. Naming the time, date, location, and exact amount of bullet casings destroyed can be used by TPTB to crack down on metal recyclers, who are our Allies in this effort.

D/ If you choose to melt down some brass, one thing to be aware of is - it can tend to separate (the zinc from the copper). You don't want to be breathing zinc fumes. It needs to be done outside.

bullet control is coming. you're going to have to show id, there's going to be a limit as to how much you can buy (like cold medicine), and you're going to have to show your "gun registration card" to prove you own a firearm that takes the caliber you're trying to purchase.

If a scrapyard has bullet casings, they came from a military base. Gun ranges don't take casings to scrapyards when they can get a lot more from them elsewhere.

Do you think it's a good idea to save all the bullet casings of bullets you shoot even if you don't have a reloading machine? I've been doing it of 308 rounds, but not pistol rounds.

Short answer = Yes!

Long answer = Yes!

Edit: To add you can not know what he future holds, someday you may get into reloading or find a friend that does reload.

Pick up the stuff that does not have any bad damage, brass that looks crappy/dirty or a few dings, can be cleaned and polished in a good tumbler back to like new condition.

Then the brass you have will be gold!

as a newbie to guns, i've been trying to figure out what are the most common calibers.

as far as i can tell, 9 mm for handguns, & .308 Winchester for rifles. the .308 Winchester having some overlap with the 7.62x5x (51 ? 52?) NATO rounds.

for you casing collectors, what do you notice as the most common bullet sizes ?

i read somewhere that the 9 mm is used by "60% of all police organizations", some statistic something like that.

going off on a tangent - personally, i'm curious if anyone has ever designed & built a functional handgun that uses rifle ammunition, like the 308.

There was this:

Holy shit, a .308 FAL pistol (http://gold-silver.us/forum/showthread.php?64099-Holy-shit-a-308-FAL-pistol)

Of course if you are referring to something more "conventional", then no- not that I'm aware of.
The idea was toyed with in a smaller caliber though.

I think you're asking if something like ^ that was tried in .308. no?

I don't know about where you guys live, but here the 308 is cheaper than the 223. The 7.62x39 is still the cheapest though, if you can find it.

Driller, whats the closest federal law enforcment or military base to you that does firearms training? This is typical of large bases to sell what they clean up. Rather, what an outside company comes to clean up. Most brass is sold as scrap, NOT reloads, where they get ground up, melted down and remade into raw materials for other things.

Honestly, it doesnt really throw up a huge red flag for me, but it does perk my interest. THanks for the story either way ;)

Remington had their XP100 (bolt action) pistols in a variety of calibers, including .308 Win.

I used to own one, had it chambered for the then wildcat 7mm-08 (.308) back in my metallic silhouette shooting days. That was one bad ass gun.

The 450 Million rounds of 0.40 that Homeland Security ordered might make that caliber pretty common.

OP, that prophetic post is coming true.

Obama to Ban Guns Through BulletsObama is taking the back door to gun control with a new proposition from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE). It seems that President Obama is now working to ban guns though bullets, as a notice from the BATFE let sellers know that there could soon be a ban placed on one of their most popular selling bullets.
