What the deal with the yellow "Auto-Saved" thing that keeps popping up?

What is the purpose of it, how is it useful, and can it toggled as an option?

It's to save your posts as you are writing them in case something happens (like a power failure or something) that causes you to disconnect from the forum or otherwise lose your post.

I'm pretty sure that one time I was typing a post, and Firefox crashed, and when I restarted the browser and my tabs came back, my typed post was there as it had been before the crash, saved presumably due to "auto-save".

I simulated a "crash" by terminating by browser session (task manager) after an auto save.

All my tabs came back up to their original content, and this thread, but my open edit was lost. Odd.

Wonder if it's working? If not, it would free up a lot of resources for the forum to disable it...that's a lot of additional disk writes on the server.

I keep noticing it, but I can't figure out what it actually does.

It's a script that runs, and I can prevent it from running, but I lose any text formatting abilities if I do.

Yes, thank you vacuum. Even works days after you 'lose' a post (as I often seem to do, it somehow gets deleted/erased before I finish)!! Yippee.

There's nothing worse than losing 10 minutes or more of typing due to a glitch.
