HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- A gas station clerk fatally shot one of two would-be robbers in Hollywood after a local homeless man gave him an ominous warning, police said.
The incident took place shortly before midnight at the Exxon Mart gas station and convenience store at 5190 South State Road 7.
That was when a homeless man who sometimes helps out at the business noticed two men near the store who appeared to be "readying" for a robbery, said Hollywood Police Sgt. Pablo Vanegas.
"He ran into the store and told the clerk, 'they're masking up outside,'" Vanegas said.
The homeless man, who wasn't identified, took cover from the shooting that quickly followed and wasn't hurt.
"The clerk was armed, at which point multiple shots were exchanged between the clerk and the suspect," Vanegas said.
The man who was shot died at the scene, police said. The second man fled in a white car but he was subsequently apprehended, according to Vanegas.
Officials identified the surviving suspect as Joshua Stuart, 19, of Hollywood.
The names of the store clerk who did the shooting or the man who was fatally shot have not been released. The police investigation is continuing.
