Accidental shooting at Raleigh gun show
Updated at 05:18 PM today
The Dixie Gun and Knife Show was shut down after a shooting Saturday.
RALEIGH -- Law enforcement officials have confirmed a shooting at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds Saturday afternoon.
Agency spokesman Brian Long says a 12-gauge shotgun discharged while its owner, 36-year-old Gary Lynn Wilson, of Wilmington, unzipped its case for a law enforcement officer to check it at a security entrance.
Three people were injured when the gun went off, officials said, including a retired Wake County Sherriff's deputy working the show.
Fifty-year-old Linwood Hester, of Durham, and 54-year-old Janet Hoover, of Benson, were transported to WakeMed Hospital. Officials said they are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Deputy Jake Alderman, 54, of Wake Forest, was treated at WakeMed North Healthplex and has been released.
The gunshot also shattered the window in the main hallway leading into to big room, witnesses said.
The Dixie Gun and Knife Show was shut down after the incident. The event is typically scheduled at the fairgrounds about four times a year.
The event drew a huge turnout Saturday as just about all gun businesses have seen a spike in sales following recent moves by the Obama administration to step up gun control since a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school just over a month ago left 20 children and six adults dead.
The Dixie Gun and Knife Show will continue as planned on Sunday, Jan. 20. There will be no private gun sales allowed, and personal guns will not be allowed on property. Gun sales will be allowed only by licensed dealers within the confines of the Jim Graham Building.
At the request of State Fairgrounds officials, the Wake County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. There is no information available on pending charges.

Bullets strike Montville homes, narrowly miss officers as AK-47 target practice goes awry

MONTVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Two men are under arrest after their target shooting with an AK-47 assault weapon sent bullets flying through a Medina County neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.
One Parnham Drive resident, unaware of the hail of bullets, scurried back into her home as police arrived to warn her and her two small children of the danger, another homeowner ran to her basement.
Montville Township police found themselves dodging bullets as they tracked down where the shots were originating.
“When I get about a half mile back in the field up on a hill, gunfire started again, and started hearing rounds go over my head,” said Montville Police Sgt. Matt Neil.
Police said the men on Windfall Road were shooting at a target in a field with handguns and an AK-47.
“They were drinking alcohol, they had some drugs on them and they were just outside, in their backyard shooting paper targets,” Neil said. “They felt because they were shooting at a downward angle, that it would have been OK.”
Bullets skipped off the ground, and carried over hills striking at least two homes police estimated to be 500 yards from where the target shooting took place.
Mark Bornino, 53, of Windall Road in Montville Township and R. Daniel Volpone, 45, of Parma were arrested.
Mary Kuruc heard a crash and found debris on a sofa. Her daughter discovered a hole in the wall and a place on the ceiling where a bullet ricocheted. They called 911 and while officers were investigating, her home was hit again.
“We noticed a second bullet hole, followed the trajectory of it and noticed the bullet landed in the microwave,” Kuruc said.
She and her two daughters left the kitchen just moments before the second shot hit the far kitchen wall at eye level.
Police removed the wall-mounted microwave as evidence as the bullet remained lodged in the appliance.
Police said dozens of shots were fired. The AK-47, three handguns and over 700 rounds of ammunition were seized.
The men face a series of felony charges. Police want to hear from any residents whose homes may have been hit.
Kuruc, grateful no one was injured, echoed a warning Montville police are sending, “If people are going to target shoot out there, be very careful with where that bullet goes because it could have killed somebody.”

The comment from the first link:
I'm from Raleigh, and I went to that gun show this morning. There is no "storage" of guns here. What happens is you give your pistol over to a law enforcement officer, who is supposed to check that the gun is unloaded, and then uses a zip tie to secure the weapon and make sure it is unusable. The owner of the weapon handed the gun over to the cop, the cop failed to check the chamber, pulled the zip tie tight around the trigger, and bang. The cop shot two people because he failed to follow the two most important rules you learn in any firearms safety class. 1: treat every gun as if it were loaded. 2: keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. I predicted this. I see a lot of people saying "if guns are dangerous why are there no shootings at gun shows", TPTB need a mass killing at gun shows, even these examples to prove how dangerous they are. Expect more.

SANTA FE, New Mexico (Reuters) - A teenage boy with several weapons including an assault rifle shot and killed five people, three of them children, at a house in Albuquerque, New Mexico, authorities said on Sunday.
The boy, whose exact age had yet to be determined, was arrested and charged with the killings which took place late Saturday night, said Aaron Williamson, a Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department deputy.
"The victims all had multiple gunshot wounds, and there appeared to be multiple weapons, including an assault type weapon," Williamson said.
The children appeared to be "elementary- to middle-school age," Williamson said. The boy was charged with two counts of murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death, he said.
He said it had not been determined whether the weapons were from inside the house or brought from somewhere else.
It also was not yet clear whether the five people killed were related or what the relationship was between the teen and the victims.
The nation remains on edge about gun violence after a man killed 20 schoolchildren and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school in December using an assault rifle, sparking a renewed debate about gun control.
President Barack Obama has proposed a new assault weapons ban and mandatory background checks for all gun buyers, and New York on Tuesday broadened its assault weapons ban and restricted the allowed capacity for ammunition magazines.
Several other states also are considering whether to tighten gun controls.
The use of assault weapons is legal in New Mexico, although state lawmakers are considering bills that would tighten gun control laws and require background checks for nearly anyone buying a firearm.
