While the OP is animusic, there are real samples of such knowledge @ House on the Rock in Wisconsin:

The lighting is very dim throughout the place, so the video quality isn't very good. And as you can imagine, the maintenance/knowledge to keep the inventions functioning must be nearly dead. When we were there last summer, many of them played recordings to the physical movement (lip-synched if you will) of the instruments.

Back in the day everything was mechanical IE: Mark Twain, he had a part in the invention of the Linotype to make cast slugs for printing presses (letterpress). I owned one of these contraptions for my business. It did not come with a DVD or directions. I figured the thing out after most of a year on my own. What it did was melt lead and squeeze that into a cast made from a shitload of individual parts. If you got it wrong and couldn't hit the eject button in time it would willfully spray hot lead all over my legs. I used to have great stress headaches at the time since I was dicking with the thing instead of completing jobs which were due. Once it spit up you had to shut the thing down for a couple hours and then remove the hardened lead, clean and replace everything to their particular location, power up and try again. I would have done videos but those were not real viable at the time.

Geezus I do NOT miss that thing!

I'd like to see these replace the player piano. With the advances we've seen in robotics that should be easy.
