I couldn't watch for one minute. Too painfull. Why not ship those cars off to Cuba instead? Such a waste!

it seems like a waste.
but it takes time & energy to take them apart, sort them, etc.
in the meantime, that quality of scrap got about $200 per ton, for a while - in 2012.
if i was sitting on 100 old cars, and hadn't gotten around to marketing them, and no one else had - i'd be tempted to trade those 100 old cars as scrap for ...
back then, steel scrap was more like 1 cent a pound. so, maybe $20 per car, $2000 total.
which in 1961 would be 2 x 715 ounces = 1400+ ounces of silver ! 14 ounces of silver per car. tempting.
there was no USENET in those days to market used car parts on.
