New Strain of Norovirus Is Circulating In The U.S.

Piggybacking off this year’s influenza epidemic, a new strain of the highly contagious norovirus has reached the U.S. from Australia (http://topics.time.com/australia/).

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports (http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6203a4.htm) in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report that the new norovirus strain, called GII.4 Sydney, is currently the leading cause of norovirus outbreaks in the U.S. and accounted for 58% of cases of the infection in December.

Often confused with the stomach flu because of its contemporaneous circulation with influenza during winter months, norovirus causes 21 million cases of illness, often involving severe vomiting and diarrhea, 70,000 hospitalizations each year in the U.S., and 800 deaths. Where influenza is a respiratory illness, norovirus, which comes in five forms, favors the stomach and intestinal tract, causing inflammation of tissues that leads to pain (http://topics.time.com/pain/), nausea, and the diarrhea and vomiting. According to the CDC, about 51% of the cases in the U.S. were caused by person-to-person transmission, and 20% resulted from contaminated food. Most infections occur in places where large numbers of people are gathered, such as schools (http://topics.time.com/schools/), nursing homes and cruise ships, where the virus can pass easily from host to host.

The new strain of norovirus was first identified in March 2012 in Australia and has since sickened people on several continents. Historically, the GII strains have caused more severe illness than other versions of the virus, but officials at the CDC says it is too early in the season to determine if GII.4 Sydney is infecting people at higher rates than in previous years. The norovirus season runs from November through March and cases typically peak in January.

“Although most of the time you recover after 24 or 48 hours, [norovirus] is a reason for people to come to the emergency room, and is even responsible for a small number of death each year. It’s not a completely innocuous virus and can certainly ruin a vacation,” says Dr. John Treanor, chief of the Infectious Diseases Division at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

There are no treatments for norovirus, other than riding out the infection, but Treanor and a group of scientists are currently testing a vaccine developed by LigoCyte Pharmaceuticals (http://www.ligocyte.com/). The shot contains a part of the norovirus’ outer layer, which they hope will generate a strong immune response in those who get immunized.

(MORE: Bad Food: Illnesses from Imported Food are on the Rise, CDC Says (http://healthland.time.com/2012/03/15/bad-food-illnesses-from-imported-food-are-on-the-rise-cdc-says/))

A vaccine would be critical for preventing the disease from escalating in populations; because it spreads so quickly, norovirus infections are difficult to contain. “You really only have to be exposed to a couple of viral particles to get sick,” says Treanor. “This makes it very contagious because when you have norovirus, you are dispersing literally millions of particles. When it only takes one or two to make the next person sick, it translates into very high contagiousness.”

Fortunately, the same things you do to protect yourself from flu also work in holding off infection with norovirus. The CDC recommends (http://www.cdc.gov/norovirus/preventing-infection.html) the following:

Wash your hands carefully with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom or changing diapers and before handling food.
Carefully wash produce and seafood before cooking and consuming them.
If you’re sick, wait 2-3 days after you recover before preparing food for anyone.
Immediately clean any infected or contaminated surfaces and wash laundry thoroughly.

This beast can live on dry surfaces for weeks and still infect you! :o And hand sanitizers do not work.

0.4% of cases are hospitalized, that seems fairly mild to me, considering that many people run to the hospital for mere temporary nuisances...

But if you have a vaccine to sell, you really don't have much to lose by exaggerations of its seriousness.

I read a tidbit that children's desks at school have something like 300 times more bacteria than the toilets....rarely/never wash the desks.

Same with shopping cart handles at the grocery store. Those things never get washed.

I see so many gross things at my gym....nasty pig like human shaped things walking around with legs.

Just throwing out a warning, to be careful when out in public, even this one can kill even if the numbers are low. Even 800 deaths are high, if by chance you end up being one of them.

Also this is a new strain, nobody has any built up antibody's for this one.

Maybe go to a kosher gym instead, so you don't have to mingle with the goyim?

Probably practically everybody that died from this (if the number is correct, which I doubt), had other health problems, were weakend by old age, and this was the little drop that made the glass flow over...

Yeah, my daughter wanted to go to the hospital for a sore throat. Yeah, she was in bad shape; but there's nothing that could be done. I don't get that mentality

I'm pretty sure this is what I had Tuesday morning. I thought it was food poisoning, but was puzzled from the lack of ass faucet. I woke up Tuesday morning at 3am and ran to the bathroom puking my guts out. I couldn't keep anything down and puked throughout the morning. I also had chills, a fever and sore joints. By noon I was feeling fine and went snowboarding.

Last night my girlfriend came home puking. She thought it was bad sushi. She had the same symtoms but by noon she felt fine and was drinking beer a few hours later. We called it the ten hour flu.

To me it is good for the body to defend it's self against things as this is what our immune systems are for,

When we inoculate ourselves for this that and the other we run the risk of our immune system becoming obsolete and not strong enough to fight the real fight when it comes along.

I go to one all the time. Haven't had a cold in 8 or 9 years. The only way a gym is gonna do you in is if you lick the bars, and text on your phone instead of getting down to business.

The last cold I had lasted 48 hours everyone else that got it friends/family were laid out for a week like a truck hit them.

If you want to make yourself bullet proof, alternate cold showers & sauna a few times afterwards on top of it all....fever/chills. Immune system will be a beast.

You will be impervious to all that walk among you, and look pretty damn fantastic as well. ;)

I think something like 90% of the immune system is housed in the gut. Eating antibiotic laced meat, sugar, and drinking chlorinated water all attack the beneficial bacteria that keep the immune system strong. A non organic meat, sugar laden, chlorinated western diet is an immune system killer.

Sounds good in theory. Personally I get a lot of exercise just in my work. Not cardio though so I routinely walk the steep hills around where I live. I haven't been sick in a number of years either. Knock on wood, but whatever. I'm prepared for a bout of flu if that is what it takes.

Gargle Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar.

If that doesn't work try Colloidal Silver, and/or Oil of Oregano.

That's a trick question, there is no such reality. If you find a jewish person who excels at sports, and has a muscular physique, get a net and capture it....it's like finding a unicorn. Top dollar on ebay.

Stop whining piss is an excellent disinfectant, and I don't do tennis, it isn't healthy to engage in assymetrical sports... Save on the priority courier fee, and eat that golden sprinkled fudge brownie yourself...

Gross! You like the smell of other peoples urine when you shower? LOL...someone likes to shower in a toilet. Any other strange fetishes? I get the feeling unusual methods of disinfection are going on where you live...ooops...that's ok, here...let me disinfect that for you!
