Police officers in Seattle, Washington held their first gun buyback program in 20 years this weekend, underneath interstate 5, and soon found that private gun collectors were working the large crowd as little makeshift gun shows began dotting the parking lot and sidewalks. Some even had “cash for guns” signs prominently displayed.

Police stood in awe as gun enthusiasts and collectors waved wads of cash for the guns being held by those standing in line for the buyback program.

People that had arrived to trade in their weapons for $100 or $200 BuyBack gift cards($100 for handguns, shotguns and rifles, and $200 for assault weapons) soon realized that gun collectors were there and paying top dollar for collectible firearms. So, as the line for the chump cards got longer and longer people began to jump ship and head over to the dealers.

John Diaz, Seattles Police Chief, wasn’t pleased with the turn of events stating “I’d prefer they wouldn’t sell them,” but admitted it’s perfectly legal for private individuals to buy and sell guns, FOR NOW. Mayor Mike McGinn said at a news conference the private transactions are a loophole that needs to be closed. “There’s no background checks, and some (guns) could be exchanged on the streets that shouldn’t be in circulation.”

But Schuyler Taylor, a previous gun retailer attending the event in hopes of buying weapons, asked “Why not offer them cash versus a gift card? I’m still taking the guns off the streets; they’re just going in my safe.”

People were reportedly, at one point, jumping out of vehicles whilst sitting in traffic – making on the spot deals with the gun dealers.

But the BuyBack wasn’t a bust. On the contrary – their $80,000 supply of gift cards didn’t last but 2 hours, and by 11:00 am they began attempting to issue IOU’s at which point the entire crowd responded by turning and marching toward the gun dealers, forcing the police officers to pack it up for the day.

On one last note of hilarity, the Seattle Police department claims that they will check the buyback guns to see if any were previously stolen and, if so, try to return them to the rightful owners! LOL. Brilliant!

In 1992, Seattle police collected more than 1,200 guns in a four-day buyback program.

Now the only question is, when will the Seattle Police department stage the next gun show?

Trust me, they are burning the midnight oil trying to figure out the best way to stop this. A "loophole" they call it, when private parties attempt to sell their property without first consulting the state.

This story is Darwinism and the beauty of free market competition in action. Darwinism: sellection out of the dumbest, the folk who would sell their guns for chump change in dollars. Free market competition from the private gun buyers who know what the guns are worth and are willing to pay it. When the free market is allowed to operate everyone benefits: the sellers get fair market for their guns, the private buyers save the guns from the shredder, and the cops get no guns at all.

Got to love it!

The free market at work and the walking donuts are left befuddled!

Would love to see one of these buyback/gun shows result in,

Pigs = 0% guns

People buy and swap guns = 100%

Talk about a matter if time. It only makes sense.

If they want to parade all those awesome mint condition looking pieces in the media, what did they expect was going to happen?

they are trying to make sure that when the cold Civil War becomes a hot Civil War, that those who are loyal to the (old-fashioned USA) are vastly under-gunned.

I just got to thinking. Many years ago on GIM1 we were discussing a gun "buy-back" where they were offering $50 gift cards or some nonsense, and someone asked what would happen if private parties organized next to the "buy-back" offering to buy the guns for more than the pigs were offering. I remember my thought was that you'd probably be stopped, possibly charged with any number of conflated or made up offenses, but this proves me wrong! Next time there's a cheap "buy-back" where I live I'm going to have to think hard about doing this myself!

Since schools are suspending students for drawings of guns and torn paper inthe shape (roughly) of a gun, can I sell a piece of paper to the cops for $100?

And if TSA can seize a four inch plastic GI Joe 'rifle', does one of those qualify as well?? ???

The is pure government terrorizing the the kids with fear and intimidation. If you or I did this we would face criminal charges for harassment and mental cruelty. This generation of kids are going to grow into neurotic spineless fearful adults. It is shameful and criminal what the government is doing.

It's like a gun show but cheaper.

Gun shows usually charge at the door.

Someone bought an expended Stinger missile launcher at that gun buyback. That one got seized (after someone bought it for a hundred bux).

LOL... a private buyer bought it for $100.

A man standing outside the event Saturday bought the military weapon for $100 from another person there, according to Detective Mark Jamieson.

The single-use device is a launch tube assembly for a Stinger portable surface-to-air missile and already had been used. As a controlled military item, it is not available to civilians through any surplus or disposal program offered by the government, according to Jamieson.

....
....
Meanwhile, police said people who wanted to turn in guns could do so at any time outside a buyback program, though they wouldn't be compensated for it.

So they are offering $100 for a rifle, shotgun, or handgun, or $200 for an assault rifle, in the form of a "gift card". Couldn't a licensed dealer organize in the same way, offering 50% more, in cash, and advertise it as a private "Buy-Back Program"?

Yes, and they absolutely should - get those guns off the streets.

Get them off the streets, and into the hands of gun dealers who resell them to lawful private buyers, where they end up in their homes, vehicles, and in holsters on their sides or slung over their backs.

But I do agree with gungrabberliberalfaggotcommunists on one thing, and that's that guns shouldn't be on the street.

They should be carried by people - they shouldn't be laying on the street pavement, I mean that's just irresponsible.

Guns don't belong on or in streets or roads or even avenues or boulevards.

Actually they were Amazon gift cards according to CBS radio news spot. They ran an opinion piece tying this episode with the "gun show loophole". It was audio splicing at it's finest to get a slanted story.
