The Saudi government has ordered that shops that employ both men and women to set up separation walls to ensure that the two sexes are separated while they work.

From now on, stores must erect barriers not shorter than 1.6 meters to separate male and female employees. Retailers have 30 days to install the walls, or risk sanctions.

The legislation was issued by Labour Minister Adel Faqih, with the help of Abdullatif al-Sheikh, the head of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, commonly known as 'Mutawa' and the religious police, according to local press.

Essentially, women in Saudi Arabia can work either in all-women factories or in lingerie and cosmetics shops. The latter has been allowed since June 2011, when the Saudi leadership issued an order for lingerie and cosmetics shops to replace their male staffers, most of whom were Asian, with Saudi women.

As a result of the legislation, authorities announced that 44,000 jobs were created for Saudi women, for whom the unemployment rate currently stands at 36 percent, according to the Central Department of Statistics and Information. Saudi women account for only 7 percent of citizens employed by private companies.

The move followed complaints by Saudi women who felt uncomfortable buying lingerie or cosmetics from men, AFP reported. However, the decision to replace men with women also came under heavy criticism because of poor working environments for saleswomen, and cases of harassment.

Cultural attitudes towards women in Saudi Arabia are widely controversial, with the country known for its strict observation of Sharia law. At the beginning of the year, women were allowed to participate in Shura Consultative council, with 30 appointed as counselors. However, they must use a separate entrance door.

Saudi women are generally forbidden from behavior that is common in Western cultures. The Gulf kingdom is the only country in the world that bars women from driving and voting, and they must have permission from a man to work, travel or open a bank account.

in practice, religion is a way to honor one's ancestors.

i understand that hundreds of years ago, it may have been very wise to have women practice modesty - to not show their bodies in public.

but that was hundreds of years ago.

A late innovation. I recall a visit to Sudbury, Canada in the early '70s to find bars had two entrances ... one for men and one for women.

Then later in Zurich I visited a john buried below the street and handed the coins to use it to a female attendant who inserted said coin and opened the door for me.

So what it really boils down to is the men have no self control, and have to cover up everything to avoid having "impure" thoughts?

Seems like an overly excessive crutch to avoid coming to terms with nature, and evolution.

Did they bother to notice at any point every other species of life around them is born naked, and stays that way?

Maybe I need to stare at enshrined space rocks more often to understand it.

I still think there is room for modest and chivalry. We don't have to go over board but there is value in it. Chaperoning seems to have lost favour as well. I recall a story from late last year. A young woman was raped and killed after leaving a club/cocktail bar which was about 1 - 1.5kms (< 1 mile) from her home. I think her husband had left early and headed home. Tragic story and the guy who did it's a bad guy.

My question is, how many reports do you hear of women walking home in the company of their boyfriend, husband, brother, guy friend being raped and murdered? If her husband had been with her. I'm not blaming the guy for going home. Everyone thinks they live in a very safe part of the world. It's one of those uncomfortable what if's.

Just another form of economic stimulation. General contractors will have a short boom time for business.

I dont care......let them do what they want with their women.

One of two things will happen.

Either women will organize and Rebel against the oppression in a multitude of ways.

They will accept the behavior and if that is the case.....who the helll am i to judge?

I can have a opinion and it is: keep your own council and allow people theirs.

I wonder what would happen if we had an experiment, where we traded 10 million American women for one year with 10 million Saudi women and traded them back after the year was over?

Or kill them all. American men might want to keep their women and live happily ever after. :)
