yes, that contraction in GDP during 4Q 2012 - not surprising, but with all the book-cooking they do, i'm surprised they couldn't jimmy up a positive number.

over in world shipping land, the Baltic Dry Index is bouncing around the 700 to 800 region. it went up a little, over 800, at the beginning of the year, then has dropped a few percent the last few days in a row, back into the 700's.

it's high was around 10K around the summer of 2007. right now it's about where it was during the Great Panic from September 2008 to March 2009, a little higher than the low it reached a year ago, 647.


given how much prices have been rising, a decrease in nominal GDP means a severe contraction in economic activity.


on the Sporting News front, a series of winter storms have really kicked up some big waves over in Europe.

ignorring the hysteria in Navare Portugal, where they're calling a 70 foot wave a hundred foot wave, even Ireland (cold Ireland) is getting some big waves.
