One thing we do know is that it was due to a "relay". In other words, a switch they specially installed to turn on/off power at the superbowl was what caused the power to go out.

I believe it was simply to increase the total time of the superbowl as a way to sell more commercials. In addition, it could have potentially had some sort of occult ritual type purpose.
