I currently don't own any ammo cans, but want to get some since I'm starting to amass a lot of ammo.

I've seen these plastic MTM cans, which is decently priced and they come in new. I am concerned about their strength though.

On the other hand there are the used military surplus kind. Their prices seem okay, but they are heavier and used.

What are your thoughts? Do you have suggested places to buy them online? Thank you.

The surplus cans.

Go to a gun show, you will probably find a decent price. They have gone up 100% from last year gun show wise that I have been able to make.

Whats the point of putting a lock on a plastic box?

I got one recently when I ordered a couple things from Brownell's, and it works fine for what I wanted. I like the size...they are pretty large and hold a lot. I loaded mine to the top with shotgun ammo, guessing 25lbs.
I thought about getting another just for drums, spare magazines, and accessories.
They are pretty light and not anywhere near as durable as a military can. I don't know what would happen if you dropped it loaded? The latch is not secure like a military can.
When in doubt, get the "fat" 50 (Saw Box)...can't go wrong. http://store.colemans.com/cart/ammo-can-fat-50-mm-p-226.html
Not as big, but indestructible. Anything bigger gets too heavy loaded.

As far as locks, I have military cans with eye bolts that stick through the latch handle, that you can put a lock on.
Why would you put a lock on any can? I guess to keep kids/wife out, or maybe to keep other's at the range from borrowing something without you knowing? Anyone else that wanted something, would take the whole can.

The steel .50 caliber ammo cans can be had new for little more than what they fetch used these days. Midway carries them. I've been seeing them at Gander Mountain as well.
