Fair Price for Sterling Silverware

I found out that a family member is thinking of selling their sterling silverware.

To me it is SACRED, but, if they are intent on selling it, I would like to make a fair offer.

Like, whatever one of those "Hotel Buyers" pay (when a coin dealer sets up in a hotel and runs an ad in the local paper, "Cash for Gold and Silver"), +10%.

I know one guy who pays 75% of silver content for Sterling.

I'm curious what you guys would pay a family member for their Sterling.


Normally I tell family members they should be BUYING, not selling.

But, if they value the family heirloom that little, hey, I'd like to keep it in the family ... but not over-pay.

So, what do you guys think ?
Left on my own I would offer 85% of silver content.

For a scale, I like the digital scales at the post office. They measure to tenths of an ounce and are pretty accurate. Thought I would take it in there and get a weight on it.

I love old silver - especially FAMILY Silver ! :)

I hate to rip anyone off---but my cheap side would have them go shop a price and then I'd give them a premium over it to make them feel good.

I love old silver too . . . must have got that from my dad. (and the cheap part!)

Nobility eat off sterling silverware sets. It is the reason they are called blue bloods. The colloidal silver is what protected them from the plague. It is why infants get their own silver spoon to suck on. As in the saying "born with a silver spoon".

'Course you could wait until the new glow in the dark uranium silverware hits the market.

looks like i did too good a job advising them to not sell it.

they decided to keep it.

next thing you know they'll be buying 1 ounce rounds. :)
