Expecting generally 18-30" of snow throughout most of New England from Friday morning through Saturday afternoon, wind 30 mph with gusts above 50 mph.

The single-storm record for the city of Boston is 27" set in 1978. (The record for most of suburban Boston is about 40".)

Snow forecast from National Weather Service:

40 years ago, states would see an increase of babies being born due to large snow storms.
What happenes today in a gay state like Massachusetts during a snow storm...never mind, don't answer that...

Heh, that thought crossed my mind.

But people have been prepping here for days. The grocery store was busy Wednesday night; I padded my stock a little bit. People have been filling up gasoline cans and propane tanks today. There's been plenty of advanced warning.

There should be a ban on high capacity assault snowballs. ;)

Is two feet a big deal back east? Never been there. When we get two feet here, I drive over the berm and go to work or ditch and go boarding. Just wondering.

You probably don't have 5 million people living within a 40-mile radius.

Close. But they're 6000' lower. So it's sounds like more of a strain on services. Got it.

Plus, the snow here actually has a substantial amount of water content to it. Two feet of snow there can have less than an inch of water in it. We'll have 2-3" of water from this storm. It takes a lot more resources and energy to push around. And it knocks down trees, which we have a lot of here in residential areas. And they take down power lines, which are above ground here because it is cost prohibitive for power companies to bury them. It's cheaper for them to deal with monster outages every once in a while.

But to your point, people here don't really freak out about it. There's actually a general level of excitement and anticipation. The media tries to stir everyone up about it, and the people shrug. It's viewed as a challenge, and most people are determined to face it head on. It's almost a cultural thing.

I got 4 gerry cans the other day from colemans and i make a habbit that when I get paid I fill up two of them . That will give me a extra 2 tanks of Gas if the Power Goes down and the pumps fail

Lots of Knick Knacks and canned goods

The only thing Im missing is a Honda Genny and I have to wait for my Tax return

Other then that Im pretty squared up.

I think People are going drop to the ball again like they did the last time and it wont be pretty.

I always like blizzards. A good time to stay home, load a bowl of Blond Lebonese hashish and kick back...well that's what I did back in the day. When the snow stopped, it was fun to go out driving in it.

MA is calling a state of emergency and closing roads as of 4pm. I just heard on local radio that you can be arrested by driving on road. And, get this.... toll-takers are going home! Now that is a first.

$400 fine and prison time if on the road. Amazing. What has this world become?

Stay safe all of you !

Glad you are safe Sparky... and all the other Northeast GSUS'ers

Hell, when it gets 20 degrees here ( its a problem) I am letting the water drip so my pipes don't freeze, making sure all the outside pipes are wrapped, keeping the fire going, watching the batteries to make sure they don't discharge to quick, making sure I have diesel for the generator, making sure I have the 4x4 filled with gas. No trees around the house so that is good.

HELL..... 18 degrees with a foot of snow !! I wouldn't be going anywhere or doing anything.

I can't drive in snow !!!

A foot of snow , shoot I'd prolly break a leg going out to get wood. Hang in there Sparky and all of you!!!

we got about 12-14" of snow here yesterday...

i think the reason people get so freaked by big snowfall is that we simply aren't accustomed to it anymore... when i was a kid, we would get snow like this several times in the course of the winter, now we get hardly any. and when i lived in the mountains out west, snow fall like this was pretty common.

it did take me almost 2hrs to snowblow the driveway, lol then we got another 2 inches of snow overnight. the big piss off was the plow came by in the night and deposited a 2 foot berm of snow and ice at the end of the driveway. lol

Ended up with about two feet. Surprisingly few power outages across the entire region. Cleared my driveway this afternoon, then two of my neighbors who were struggling without snow blowers. Some incredible drifting. This was my back deck this morning:

Did they broadcast it through megaphone with tanks on the street, or the local news?

How many languages were the orders translated into?

Power down Friday 7:?? PM .
Power restored Sunday 9:30 AM.
Until last night in my almost half century of life I have never slept in 36F temp. That was the interior temp.

Unknown how much we got.
It's drifted all over.

Preps!!!

Plan on power being out long term. Figure out some means of getting by. If a small snow storm is major burden for you, what is coming will wipe you out.

btw- I have endured hardships in military training before. I prefer the easier way. Prep.

FIGHTING FOR WARMTH

The overnight low temperature in Nome dropped from about 12 below Monday night -- not counting windchill -- to 17 below on Wednesday morning, said National Weather Service meteorologist Charles Aldrich.

I had to chuckle when I heard on the radio the mayor- mumbles Menino tell people not to travel on the roads, shovel the sidewalks but don't push the snow into the roads.

I got to thinking- the plows push the snow onto the sidewalks and the sidewalks are shovelled into the streets. If they do it enough times the energy will be enough to melt the snow.

2 feet of snow over the last two days here in S/SE Mass.
Today had insane amounts of snow in a short time.
Almost as bad as the Feb storm imo.
