I think so too. Before Islam was organized, Allah was the name for the pagan moon-god of the day. In that culture the moon was the dominant god, not the sun, like many other cultures who worshiped the sun god (Ra in Egypt, etc.). That's why the Islamic symbol is the moon.

The root words "Illah" and "El" are both words of semitic origin which refer to "God", as is evidenced by the translated aramaic in Matthew 27:46 (and Mark 15:34):

The word Allah existed and was used long before Mu_ham_MAD was born or the Qur-an was conceived. The word Allah is not an Arabic word. It is an Aramaic word. As the English language borrowed the word "God" from Greek mythology to refer to Jehovah, the Arabs borrowed the word Allah from the Aramaic and used it as a reference to THEIR god.

Also, Allah does not always refer to a false god, like in Islam. The root of Allah is a blend of AL and LLAh which menas, in English "The God"

Llah in Arabic means god and is equivalent to the Hebrew Eloah (singular) and Elohim (plural) and the Aramaic Elah and Alaha
