View Full Version : Quiting smoking

Tomorrow is the day. I will be using the nicotine patch.

It's my one vice that I'm truly ashamed of, and wish I was a stronger man.

I've smoked on and off for many years. I've used the patch to stop before and it worked. The longest I went without smoking was about a year. That was years ago and I quit to join the fire dept, only to find that people on fire dept smoked. So I started up again.

I always found a way to justify starting smoking again. Like an alcoholic, one smoke and I'd fall off the wagon and get hooked.

There's a phrase that comes to mind, and wish I knew who to give credit for this quote: "Anything you can not say NO to, you are it's slave, and it is your master." I don't want any vices, or addictions, when the collapse happens.

I've set aside the next few days to just focus on projects at home, no distractions.

If I get the urge to smoke, a few things I am mentally prepared to do:

-drop and do 20 pushups.
-jump in my kayak and go paddling.
-dust off my surfboard, and go surfing.
-chug a beer. (kidding, sort of)
-go for a run.

Good luck, that is one hard monkey to kill, but it can be done.

Indeed. I'm not looking forward to tomorrow. The first day is always the worst. I guess I wanted to create this thread to hold myself accountable to this commitment.

old saying, everyone eventually gives up their vices. One way or another.

I'm gonna wish you good luck and I do hope you can hang in there. Long time smoker, long time ex smoker. The trick I found was to keep trying. It's like anything. It can take a little "practice" to get it right. Eventually I did. 12 months is a good effort all on it's own so you know you can do it. As we here know your body can repair most damage if you let it so there's plenty of upside to giving up smoking.

Instead of the patch , which is just trading one vice for another, why dont you go to you your local acupuncturist and get poked 3 times in one week for about 120.00 and the urge will completely leave you by the end of the third visit! You will no longer desire to smoke.

I don't think this patch is working so well. I don't really desire to smoke, I'm just sitting here miserable right now however. Like there's some angry feminist in the room that I can not escape. The only way to shut off the feminist is to have a smoke.

I don't understand what that means but go take a walk, go outside, get some air, put on some headphones and power through it!

Hitcher, that is pretty funny stuff. I know you don't mean to be funny, but Damn!

Excercise will release endorphines and remove your desire to smoke. Smoking releases endorphines. Beer is a good solution except for the fact that you are trading one vice for another. I think Ima has some good advice. In my experience, exercise is the best remedy.

I tried going for a walk earlier. It didn't help.

I will power through it, I promise. I'm doing OK, I'm reminding myself. I just need to keep my mind busy, for the most part. I do have music on loud, right now. That is helping.

I'm just getting nagged right now, big time. I'd rather be alone and not drag anyone down with me right now.

Ima's post made me think of the feminist. Some angry woman sticking needles in me. thwack. That's the last thing I need but that is what it feels like right now.

Go run.... run your ass off...... you'll forget about it 15 minutes into the run.

You are just letting it pester you right now, RUN.

I quit at 37, yep it was hard , I would get on the treadmill and run (also used the nicotine lozenges) and I was so busy trying to breathe I forgot about the cigarettes.

I'm tempted to, but I've been drinking beer. Sorry zap, know that's not what you want to hear.

I'm writing this day off, as a waste. I plan on getting up tomorrow early, and going for a run.

If you make it through the day without smoking, it's not a waste. Beer is good, but drink enough and your willpower is going to disappear and you're going to give in.

Well, I can't give in. I tossed my remaining smokes overboard last night before going to bed.

I think I'll enjoy this sunny day just being lazy and drinking beer. Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy. :)

Beer, unfortunately has a tendency to arouse the angry feminist that lurks in everyone's head, causing her become unavoidable. Mine happens to be an ugly lesbian as well. ;)

For the first four days, drink a tall glass of water every time you start to crave a smoke. Drink it right down. No sipping. Drown the bitch within.

That is wrong, Ima. On many levels, you know that.

Damhit all.
