One of the little ones in our family had something like that. I gave him a harmonica to go with it. I think mum and dad made them go disappear fairly quickly. Was very entertaining while it lasted though. When giving gifts to other peoples children it's important to consider the annoyance factor. Higher is better.

Drum sets work well. Large object requires dad to put together against his will. Too large to hide, kids generally suck on them but can really make noise. Mom and other siblings can't even watch TeeVee in peace. Best all around gift, can find cheap sets on craigslist usually in February.
