Sandy Springs, GA: Model of Libertarian Living

I read some news items yesterday about Atlanta’s descent into the next Detroit due to its levels of corruption, terrible management of funds and social issues. Due to these shortcomings, a logical trend has been sweeping the northern suburbs: cities seceding from Atlanta to save themselves. That in itself isn’t abundantly amazing, but Reason TV did an 8 minute mini-documentary on a city named Sandy Springs, which has had incredible success economically and socially, by outsourcing (virtually) everything. The city still employs emergency responders, which I also think should be outsourced, but this is one heck of a step down the right path.

We have long been proponents of this model (as many good libertarian thinkers are) and having a working model to point to is nothing short of exhilarating. This film was made in 2011 – shame on us for not knowing about it until now!

Yeah, it's better than most, but something rang out in my ear....they ran the city for half of what they were paying before, but their taxes didnt go down.

I caught that too. They called it a "reserve" most anymore call it a rainy day fund. If I was a citizen there I would say build up a 3-4 year "reserve" and lower our taxes. Then if need be in the future we can all discuss an increase if it comes to that. Or renegotiate the contract with the 3rd party.

But I definitely like the idea of no fire / police pension or public sector unions.

Three words: Demographics, Demographics, Demographics.

Detroit is the way it is, because it is 90% black and it is under black rule. A quick look at Wiki says Atl is about 55% black. It's on it's way to look like Detroit; but not there yet.

Remember -- Detroit = Haiti = E. St Louis = Ghana = Sierra Leone = Jamaica. They are all shit-pits and always will be.

Why would they? They've embraced corporatism/Fascism.
