This is one of the comments to the article:
Rumor has it - and this has been a rumor for awhile now - that doomsday preppers are stockpiling the drug, even going to the extent of buying the fish antibiotics at the pet store (which is the same thing). And, this stockpiling and bulk purchasing by them when it was cheap is what has caused the price increase. The price has been intentionally raised to try to keep people from stockpiling it. Now, is that so that it will be available for people that are sick and need it or is it because the government has sinister plans in the works and doesn't want it to be widely available, stockpiled in the mean time, or cheap enough for the commoner to afford it. The answer to that question depends on whether you have your tin foil hat on or not.
As I understand it this is a basic antibiotic, and there could be no reasonable reason why it would go from .20 cents a pill to $5 per pill. NONE! Generally antibiotics are grossly overprescribed, but it does save lives when it isn't. The reason may very well be to prevent preppers from getting this, or maybe to create antibiotic resistant strains, people stop taking it when they appear to get well from the infection, because they don't want to pay $5 a pop, the surviving bacteria re-emerges and is doxycycline resistant from then on...

Aha you need palladium as a catalyzer to make it, so that's the reason for its price hike!

According to the FDA, the reason for the shortage is "increased demand", although I don't know what kind of demand could cause a bottle of pills to go from $10 to $250 overnight.

More likely some new patent was just awarded which protects the manufacturers from competition.

Seems unlikely since the drug is almost 50 years old... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doxycycline
It treats plague and anthrax though, maybe that is the clue...

Nothing could make doxycycline to go form $10 to $250 but a pure speculation.
I ran into it recently on alibaba.com - chinese suppliers site - looking for something else. It costs cents, you can buy DRUMS of it.

$30-50 per KILOGRAM.

I have made two deals with alibaba and both were not deals. I got some product that was not what they represented it as, in the first case I got some carbon infrared panels that were in many different shapes and sizes and state of assembly. The second case they said they had an EFFIO-P camera and it is an EFFIO-E (I think).
Counterfeit everything, is what China deals in, buyer beware.
PS:I got money off of both transactions so I'm happy.
