Got it thrown into a box at an auction. It is in an envelope postmarked 1973 from New York. It is 8 1/2 x 11 with another picture on the reverse.

No. A print of some sort. Quite bright tho.
I almost threw the envelope away and then fished it back out of the garbage.
I bought a 60 lb box of mostly junk and sorted it out at the auction.
[the box had a Post versalog slide rule and a couple other goodies]

It looks like it could be old Indian Islamic art, but obviously a newly printed one...
More likely Persian after googling the subject...

I agree. Let the buyer decide what it is (and the value).
The whole box cost $20 (I bid too much) but the slide rule is valued at $120 by itself.

It was only later that Islam did not allow people's faces to be painted. Therefore this is a reproduction of early Persian , Islamic art.
See the section "Painting" on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_art
Note that the Persians and the Indians - Mughals - communicated and exchanged culture, so some might be Persian , or it could be Mughal. Neat find!

The LLC I represented chose to discharge the obligation in FRNs.
