I think it is always a bit difficult to determine the intention behind positions on the derivative market. It may have been a spread position someone took out for instance, where half was on a put and the other half on a call at a different rate, the counter parties or market makers that took the opposite side of the bet, takes out an opposite position based on their risk profile, all in all it may have looked like a $900 million bet, but none of the players may not have taken a net position greater than say $10 million each, and the reason may have been something totally innocent like securing the exchange rate for a big contract in Euro's vs Dollars. Certainly there may be disinformation artists, that spin something like this to create an environment of chaos and fear, feeding on the ignorance on how this market works...
